View Full Version : The Official LxLB 2011 Rules/Discussion Thread

I think this is the 5th one. Damn, this board is old. Anyway
Nominating Bands:
-Each Participant will submit a list of 12 bands, including one headliner-size act, which should be bolded.
-Lists should include one song per band to be used for sampling/playlists
- It is not required but would be extremely helpful if these lists were alphabetized
-Lists are first come first served. No calling specific bands. Have backups. Have backups to your backups.
- Please keep the… “Critiquing” of peoples choice of bands to a minimum. It’s going to happen, but really; if you don’t like them, don’t vote for them.
- What bands aren’t eligible to be nominated
• Any band who played the actual Lollapalooza this year (I have the list)
• Any band that played as part of this project last year (I have that list too)
• Any band that has headlined any of the past 3 Lollapalooza’s (09, 10, 11)
• Any band that is deemed by the board to “play every year” (The Cure, David
Bowie, etc.)
• Any band that has not played a public show in at least 18 months or is not currently considered active
• Solo artists that do not have announced solo dates. For example, Jack White can only perform with the Raconteurs.
• Nominated bands can perform specific albums only if they’ve been touring doing so. Roger Waters can perform The Wall. Metallica can perform the Black Album. Hell, Weezer can perform Pinkerton if you want to go that route.
- Nominations will start at a TBD date and run for 5-6 days
The Ranking Committee:
- Consists of 5 members, 2 of which have already been decided
-MUST BE COMMITTED TO COMPLETE TASKS ON TIME!!!!
- Idea is to take all bands complied, determine appropriate time slots for all of them, and group them accordingly
- Quick turnaround: 24-48 hours per step
Voting:
- Once ranking committee does their job, 12 polls for all different sized acts
-Will either be started by me or whoever wants to create one, whatever the people decide
-Pick 6 or however many you’re allowed to pick
Playlists:
-Playlists will need to be constructed for all the bands in the poll based on songs suggested with nominations
-We could have one guy do all of it, or several per poll, again depending on what option we decide to go with
Scheduling:
-Still need one person to oversee this part
-Approximately 6 schedules will be made once voting is finalized
• If more than 6 people want to do this, they’ll be selected at random
• If selected for Ranking Committee, you cannot participate in scheduling. However, if you are not selected for the ranking committee, you can still participate in making a schedule
-When voted on, all schedules will be anonymous to ensure that nobody’s reputation (or lack thereof) will prevent them from getting votes
-PLEASE BE COMMITTED TO TURNING THESE IN ON TIME
Poster: Do we still have the old templet somewhere? If not, who wants it?
And, if there are any huge holes that I forgot, now would be the time to tell me. Also, feel free to critique any of this. I just tried to remember what was done last year.

You didn't fuck up (fyi it's usually 15 bands but that might have been a deliberate choice), but I do suggest posting a list of ineligible bands up top in the noms thread.
Also a special perry's nominations thread like last year for the homos that like dubstep.
MadBird11

I made a deliberate choice to cap at 12 because, based on the interest survey, I'm expecting 36-40 sets of noms, and 480 bands seems manageable compared to 600.
I have lists of ineligible bands in addition to permanently ineligible bands that will be placed at the top of the nomination thread.
Did we do a Perry's thread last year? I thought we just did it all together.

Since I'm aiming for Wednesday at the latest, here we are, at least 95% anyway. As mentioned in the first post, all bands from Lolla 11, LxLB 2010, and headliners from the previous 3 Lollapalooza's. In addition, an all time banned list will be made probably tomorrow morning, which I'll also post here.

Question: #1 headliners.
Last year, the stipulation was that no bands who have ever gotten top billing (minus the Pixies) could play. Should we open this round of voting up to Pearl Jam, Radiohead, and Red Hot Chili Peppers?

What about bands who have headlined twice but never taken #1 billing (I believe this one only applies to Kanye West solo and Wilco. Possibly the Killers as well but I think they are already gone cos 2009). I'd be willing to adjust if the throne is deemed ineligible on the grounds that one of its members has already played 2x.

I think I ultimately ended up only creating one playlist last year. Nizzle did a bunch if I remember correctly.
MadBird11
11-28-2011, 08:03 PM
That made 0 sense.
Let me try again:
I have a list going of bands that have been nominated multiple times over previous LxLB's that should never be nominated again in order to keep the thing fresh. Headliners are pretty easy (Bowie, Cure, Bjork, etc.), including all previous #1 headliners in real life Lolla. The real issue is undercard/subheadliner acts that people keep nominating aside from A Tribe Called Quest and David Byrne.
Krentistthedentist
11-28-2011, 08:04 PM
I believe all of the old LxLBs have been lost.

I am keeping them eligible based on that and the fact that they could ultimately be at the real Lolla next year. However, we can only have The Throne or Jay-Z and Kanye solo shows nominated, not both.

I could probably do a few but it is probably best to just split up the work amongst the group of people creating the polls. You create a poll -> you create the accompanying playlist.

I would like to point out/ask a few things of the ranking committee/board.
1. There are a few acts not named as headliners that I think have a legitimate case to be so. The biggest name is Paul Simon, but there are others. What do we want to do with those?
2. Is Blur confirmed to play (public) shows in the near future? Faith No More? Other acts on the list. The goal is to make this as plausible as possible, but if we want to leave them as is, that's fine too. I just want a few other opinions.

i guess. i don't really know. i see about the same amount of variety/new names we get for this thing every year. question is whether people will vote for the fresh faces or go with the usual decemberists/black keys/band of horses etc.
though the ranking committee really should go through the nominations so far because there are tons of obvious/borderline headliners nom'd as subs right now. i mean if we're considering the raconteurs a headliner (which is probably legit at this point), then stuff like paul simon, weezer, & the flaming lips are headliners as well.

So could someone else hypothetically nominate Drake as a headliner under the (obvious) assumption that he isn't going to fly as a sub?
For this reason, I think we need to debate possible headliners from the pool of non-headliners as they come in. It doesn't seem fair to exclude acts from the list because the nominator wanted to nominate more than one headliner.
In addition to Paul Simon and Drake, I think Weezer playing their first two albums and Van Halen would both easily be top 6 acts. We should discuss that now so we can let other folks nominate those acts.
I'll be submitting my list tomorrow. I'm going to do my best to nominate acts of a variety of sizes.

My thoughts on the discussed headliner-worthiness:
Yes: Blur, Drake, Weezer, Van Halen
Borderline: Paul Simon (leaning toward 'no' at Lollapalooza)
No: Bon Iver, Ludacris, Blondie, Yusuf Islam

What about the Flaming Lips?
I'm voting "yes"
carligula
12-04-2011, 08:39 AM
Flaming Lips were 6th at ACL 2010, but there were only 5 true headliners that year as the Eagles played unopposed. I could see them go either way as the lowest headliner or biggest pre-headliner. Also, they play everything, so who cares?
Paul Simon had top billing over Foo Fighters and WSP at Hangout. Just because he would be a bad fit for Lolla doesn't mean he wouldn't be a top 3 act.
If Roth is back with Van Halen and they're promoting a new album, I think it's ridiculous to think they would be anything but a top 3 act-- once again, regardless of the fit for the festival.
Blur is in that weird area where they might not be appreciated enough here to headline. That's why a lot of folks think it's unlikely they would ever play Lolla. I would say they're a headliner, but I wouldn't argue with a spot before the #1 act.
Weezer has already headlined Lolla and while many think they've passed their peak a long time ago, I don't think they've fallen that far. They were billed 6th at Bonnaroo 2010-- a fest that will often stack to top of the lineup and undervalue "alternative rock" bands (like the Strokes last year and Yeah Yeah Yeahs in 2009).

I just want to point out that I nominated Ben Folds Five because there has been talk of more new material and a possible tour following the new tracks on Ben's recent retrospective. I'd like to think they would be a headliner, but I don't think that would realistically be the case.

These were the 12 categories I came up with last year. Keep in mind, they aren't perfect but they make the process much simpler. Do we need to modify them based on any changes in the 2011 schedule? For example, I think most people have said that the DJ side stage closer is bunk and we don't need to duplicate that.
(Times are approximate; number of available slots in parentheses)
South Headliner (3)
North Headliner (3)
Main Stage 6:30 (6)
Main 4/Side 7 (12)
Main 2/Side 5 (12)
Side 3/Bloggie 6:30 (9)
Side 1/ Bloggie 5 (9)
Main 12/ Bloggie 3:30 (9)
Side 11:30/Bloggie 2:15 (9)

Good point. Maybe we can lump them in with the main 4/side 7 group. It will make for a larger group than any other (15 spots), but at the same time, we probably have more nominees of that size than most of the other groups (with the exception of main 6 acts).
I'd much rather just have 3 extra acts than go with DJs on North side. Any else feel strongly about this?

I am by no means suggesting that we allow the masses to do this bit of work. Using the committee is by far the best solution. I don't really know how the whole process works but maybe posting the results from each task as they are completed would foster some continued interest and discussion. Or maybe it would lead to pages and pages of arguments and last.fm play counts as you suggest. At least at that point there is nothing that is going to change the results.
It probably would, but if it was done here rather than cluttering up the committee thread then that'd be harmless, right?
Five_Hole
12-28-2011, 12:43 PM
Exactly. And since I'm sure we can all agree that the ranking committee's decisions are final it would be largely pointless. But in a very rare case something might be dug up (such as the nana's 2 Live Crew info yesterday) which might actually change the committee's decision and be useful too.

Okay folks, we're going to need some volunteers for the next few phases:
1) Poll starters (need up to 12 people): Will take a list of bands and assemble a playlist from the recommended songs given in the nomination thread. Will start a PUBLIC poll at the designated time and include a link to the playlist.
2) Schedule Submitters (need up to 2 more): Will create unique schedules using the winners of the polls.
3) Schedule organizer: Will provide an easy-to-fill-out schedule template that can later be posted as an image on the board.
4) Perry's stage "curators" (up to 6 people): Free-for-all choosing a realistic lineup/schedule for Perry's stage.

It's likely we'll have to have run-off polls. It's probably best that the folks who started the original polls start a new run-off poll as soon as possible. Please include a link to the original poll and only include the options for acts who are tied for the remaining spots.
For example, it there are 12 spots and only 10 acts have 10 votes or more, they're in. If 5 acts have 9 votes, then all of those acts will compete in a new poll for the remaining 2 spots. I think we can probably get away with only 2 or 3 days for run-offs. Any thoughts on that?

I think we should stay on schedule with the other polls. I think 4 polls and 1-4 run-offs at one time is manageable, right?

I am more influential than symbionese. Suck it, y'all
but seriously me and my metal bands have not been going THAT well.
For instance, this pussy board shut out two fantastic metal bands in the course of the same poll (Watain, Goatwhore)
Also, we do need more hip hop. That's where the throne comes in, but Nas and Mobb Deep both failed to garner high profile spots on the lineup. Even Kenrick lost out and A$AP and Flocka will, too.

carligula

It needs to be something that can be converted to an image that can easily be displayed in the first post of a poll thread. All the downloading and stuff last year seemed unnecessary.
Five_Hole
02-11-2012, 11:40 AM
Hmm. Well excel is probably the easiest format for creating a template. From there individual schedule creators can either post screenshots or pass them back to me or another volunteer and we can (through a few steps) convert them into JPGs. I'll put something together and get it to you to proof.
Five_Hole

One point of clarification regarding scheduling: The way the polls were set up we have:
main 4 -> side 5 -> main 6:30 -> side 7
That 6:30 should be 6, correct?
carligula
02-11-2012, 01:08 PM
The real schedule isn't consistent from day to day and north to south. There's some flexibility there. Headliners had 90 -120 minutes last year and pre-headliners had 60-75 minutes. Personally, I think preheadliners should be 6-7:15, side stage headliners 7:15-8:15, and headliners 8:15-10. That's how A Perfect Circle/Crystal Castles/Muse was.
Five_Hole

Since I'm sure there will be more debate, I'll post this here:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7187/6857983291_89648e4670_z.jpg
This is obviously only one day. We can choose to use this same template for all three days or we can vary them from day to day, or we could allow individual schedulers to vary them 15-30 minutes here and there.
carligula
02-11-2012, 03:40 PM
I know I'm the one who defined the categories, but can we have side stage acts from 11:30-12:15 and main stage acts from 12:15-1? Looking at last years' schedule nothing strarted before noon, but I'm fine with going with the older times.
Thanks for doing this, btw!
