Going to see the Shins in KC in June. The only other time I've seen them was at Lolla and the sound quality was so bad.

What was happening with the sound? They are a band I love, but I have this feeling like they wouldn't be as good live. Not sure why I think that.

I know they're higher up on the schedule and a bigger band, but them at the TDCC or Local Natives time/stage from last year would be perfect Shins...
Sunny summer afternoon is what you need to listen to them to. But i see them in the Black Keys spot from 2010 instead

It wasn't the band. It was Lolla's problem. The sound was fading in and out but I was pretty far away. It probably sounded better up close.

I thought they were good on the webcast yesterday.
Excited for their set.

Agreed. Good setlist too. Probably won't see them at Lolla though.

I'm rather bummed to hear the only original member is James Mercer. It appears everyone else quit or were replaced. That could be the reason they sound different this time around.

Mercer actually "fired' the old members in order to go in a different direction... apparently the parting was not too bad, and that they are all still friends. I can see where he wanted the changes though on the new album... the lead guitar is much much stronger.

It's not as thought the other members were too important anyways. Jame's Mercer's voice is what makes the band more than anything.

Didn't stay through the whole set but it was alright. I think its hard to do the Shins on a giant outdoor stage.

Funny, because that's about the only place you'll see them play in Chicago. Have they ever done a club/theater show here?

2nd or 3rd best I saw all weekend behind Jack and maybe the HoB Passion Pit show. Matt and I were 2nd row and it was just awesome.

I think I was with at least 10 boarders on the left side and it was a great time.

Yeah after hearing how bad they were live I was apprehensive. But they were awesome.

I was talking with Drifty about that during their set and I think people were just saying that because of their Lolla 06 set and that was because the sound was just fucked on their stage similar to M83 this year.

I wouldn't list them among the best Lolla 2012 live performances, but I very much enjoyed their set nonetheless

Completely different band. The new guitarist (Jessica) and Joe Plummer on drums really helps. Just a lot more energy. I'd like to think Mercer is more into it too. Hopefully this means he will decide to focus on this for more albums.

Yeah, from what I can tell, Mercer has completely remedied the boring live performances with his new crew. This was a fantastic show that had the potential to be incredibly boring.

I miss the old band because they would switch instruments throughout the show and that was always cool to see.
I agree they have much more energy now but Mercer's lyrics are pretty laughable on the new album.

Disagree about the lyrics. People change, Mercer got married so he obviously wasn't going to write about the same things that he did 10 years ago.

It's not the subject matter that bothers me. I feel like he ran out of metaphors.

Uh, yeah.
I saw them at the HoB, the Congress, maybe the Vic or the Riv?
They were never a bad live band with the old lineup so I don't know where that idea is coming from.
