My pleasure. It's not for everyone, but I've found it to be a lot of fun and it's a good outlet to meet folks.

Oh, and a traditional beer mile is pounding a beer every 1/4 mile. Most people cannot keep it down when they finish, so a 10 mile run with 6 pubs sounds risky. :D

We're taking the train to Milwaukee today for the afternoon. I need to drink some autumn/pumpkin beers.
We might end up at La Fuente, though...and in that case it'll be margaritas.

Went to Revolution last night and loved it. Tried both IPAs (preferred Anti-Hero), the porter and the weizenbock. The last was my favorite; tasted like a chocolate-covered banana.

A buddy of mine got the Pangaea, which I thought was just ok. Pretty sweet.

It was a dark IPA, 8% but not too hoppy. It had a sweet aftertaste, he said he used a lot of grapefruit which I liked. I've hung out with him a couple times while he was brewing but didn't pay much attention. I think it's time I learn.

falcozappa
10-23-2011, 10:08 PM
Fruity flavours definitely have a place in the world of beer. For me, it's either tart flavours like cherry, or citrus flavours like grapefruit that I like the most. Something like Lindeman's Casis is nice enough, but is too sweet for me to finish a bottle by myself (well, not entirely true. If it came to it, I'd obviously drink it rather than throw it away), and that Wells Banana Bread beer is just a bit odd.

In Texas, craft beer accounts for 5 percent of sales, but small breweries hire 50 percent of the workforce.

Highlights of the day were definitely Alesmith Horny Devil http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/396/2361 (going to buy so many of these next time in Ohio) and Russian River Damnation http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/863/12770

Also this was really good on the wife's birthday. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/16866/68772

Not sure if I'd really consider it an Old Ale though - probably would be better in the American Strong Ale category as it had a little bit of everything.

Some of the highlights of the PA funeral trip were the Selinsgrove Pumpkin (#1 rated Pumpkin in America - on nitro, very interesting. Have had so many Pumpkins and this tasted like none of the others) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1666/39371 and a world class Tripel (12% ABV) from Berwick Brewing. The wife loved it so much she had four (good thing she wasn't driving). Brought some growlers with me to fill but unfortunately neither were growlerable.

Also Selinsgrove had a fantastic hard cider but even more amazing was this http://www.beermenus.com/beers/vander-mill-totally-roasted-cider at Fountainhead. It sounds so sickeningly sweet but actually was very balanced and complemented the food quite well.

Also went to Armanetti's and picked up this http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/220/73131 which we cracked at ATP. Highly recommend everyone getting some at Binny's for a bargain of $4.49 a bomber. Huge fan of pale weizenbocks (only other one I can think of is the Aventinus one that shows up every now and then). Another very solid offering from Lagunitas who I would put in the most underated breweries category along with Great Lakes.

We also picked up the 15% Tripel from Flossmoor that they made for their 15th anniversary. Initial reviews suggest that it is far too boozy so we are going to wait a couple of years to crack it open.

Woah seriously? Weird. I mean I know Surly pulled out of Chicago and Three Floyds pulled out of the rest of the mid-west but those aren't very big breweries compared to the likes of Bear Republic and Lagunitas. Seems like the California breweries were coming more into the mid-west if anything (Stone, Bruery, Port / Lost Abbey, Firestone Walker, Alesmith).

PulpAffliction

Oh, shit. Didn't know Three Floyds was leaving me. I need to stock up.

EDIT: Derp derp. Conflated Floyds with Philosophers. I am a dumb. For realz, though, I'd be sad if Ommegang were leaving me. I've never seen Three Floyds on either side of the state line.

We've been living in the golden age of beer distribution. It's coming to an end, but it's not all bad. Certainly from a Chicago perspective, there are many more good local breweries than there used to be, and I'm led to believe that this is a national trend.

scottyh
10-31-2011, 02:38 PM
According to my buddy (who is a beer buyer for several liquor stores) Lagunitas is evaluating all areas and Denver is not one that they feel they are selling enough to justify continuing. Other areas could follow.

Driftwood
11-01-2011, 11:54 AM
Yeah in terms of events - that Fountainhead one seems to be the winner between now and Saturday when you leave (exluding Hoptacular htat you can't make). Your show is at 9 at Metro and it starts at 6 (and probably will start even earlier). Zombie Dust and Oaked Arrogant Bastard on cask, Moloko, Galactic Double Daisy Cutter (!!!), Behemoth, Double Bastard, and the new wet hopped beer from Half Acre. And not sure what they'll retain from their current taplist too but apparently they are pouring Pumpking out of a Pumpkin and they have that awesome cinnamon pecan / vanilla cider.

Assuming scotty doesn't have other plans before the show - is everyone up for Fountainhead tomorrow?

Otherwise I'm always up for Hopleaf whenever. Highlights there are Kick, Breakfast Stout, and those two awesome sours from last time - Vicardin Tripel Gueuze and Mort Subite Witte Lambic.

At Sheffield's the highlights are stil what we had last week. The Cuir is worth the $9 (13.5% abv).

Also there is a Bell's tap takeover at Beer Bistro on the 9th. Wonder if anything notable that isn't bottled will be on tap.

11-01-2011, 12:04 PM
The show is still up in the air - I'm leaning against not going, considering my flight tomorrow is at 6am and I don't think I'll be up for a concert. I'm up for Fountainhead - I may have to get there a bit late if work runs long. But I'll be there.

It was a promotional thing I think through Time Out and Goose Island. They've done like 12 of these dinners at different places throughout the summer for ten bucks each time, it's called the Brewed for Food series. I have a friend at Time Out who got me access to early tickets, otherwise they usually sell out instantly. There were only thirty people at the dinner and about a third of them were Goose Island employees. Had some interesting conversations about the Anheiser-Busch buyout with them, and some good talks about beer in general with Jared Rouben, the brewmaster from the brewpub.

They also were all gushing about excited they were for the FoBAB, which was depressing... Really bummed I didn't get a ticket for that.
