better than strays, but nowhere even close to the first three. they should have stopped when they stopped way back in the day.

Agree except for the part about them stopping. They should have kept going THEN and retired in the late 90s. Instead they took 1991-2003 off outside of Kettle Whistle.

i count SRV as blues rock, but i don't consider him a band- even with Double Trouble. and it depends on when you draw the line for "classic rock," since bands like Nirvana and PJ are now being played on classic rock stations.
regardless, ignoring the fact that i don't like the Clash in general, i don't even objectively see them as "the greatest band ever" or can see how one could argue that.
Krentistthedentist
10-24-2011, 03:13 PM
It's not that hard, really. they were a landmark band that made "landmark albums" and continually evolved their sound, made killer songs, and have been hugely influential since then. Any rock band since 1977 who claims to have not been influenced by them is full of fucking shit.
I'd just like to put that broad criteria there to point out that you can make the case for a million bands and it's incredibly stupid when people are like "ONLY THE BEATLES CAN BE CALLED THE BEST BAND EVER"

You could actually make that case for a number of bands-- the Rolling Stones, the Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, the Stooges, the Beach Boys, the Clash.
I mean, what a stupid statement, OFan
You only named 3 bands that could be in contention. Velvet Underground nfw, Black Sabbath is definitely no, The Stooges well lol no, The Clash isn't as laughable but no. The Stones yeah you could make a case for them, same for Led Zeppelin and the Beach Boys. However, the Beatles accomplished more in what 10 years, than those 3 bands accomplished over their whole careers. It is however down to only opinions of the bands. However if you look at mass appeal and critic love basically, no other band matches up. Now I'm sure your gonna look at this, your gonna ponder on it for maybe 10 mins tops. Then your gonna have some kind of smart ass comment about my shit taste or that I'm fucking clueless. However, if you ask everybody on the planet who the best band in history is, I truly believe that you would hear The Beatles more than any other name. Now on the off chance you find nothing wrong with my reply to you, which I'm sure you will because your a smartass and pretty good at it on here, then you'll find some kind of grammatical error in all of this.

Krentist's post is closer to the truth than your post. You don't have a good frame of reference to historically judge.
I speak as someone who has been buying LP's since 1974, and who has seen the Clash in their prime, and the Stones, Stooges, Beach Boys, and Sabbath at the end of their respective primes, as well as 60% of VU separately, 75% of Led Zep separately, and 50% of the Beatles separately.

But your assuming your frame of reference represents the largest cross section of the population, which might not be the case if you frequent a forum such as this. I think Oasis is arguing that if you walked around with this list of bands, Joe six pack will pick the Beatles as the most well known or "best" band of the bunch.

Exactly. Of course the Beatles would win that competition, merely off of name value. But that doesn't prove they're the best, that just means everyone would just say the group they know. Half the people you asked probably have never ever heard a Clash song before. It'd just be a bunch of ignorant people saying, "uhh.. Beatles."
Not hating on the Beatles, just by the way. I just think the point you're making wouldn't help find out who the actual "best" band is.

dumbass opinion here. even if the next album does very well, if they don't get away from the folky sound there is no way they will get very much bigger. I don't think a folk sounding band can maintain their stay on top 40 radio. yet again dumbass opinion here, now flame away.
