on the bright side, he overloaded Lolla with electronic acts last year- so as long as C3 doesn't get some urge to bludgeon us with repeats, we should be relatively safe from Skrillex headlining.
...except Bassnectar didn't play last year, did he? fuck.

Honest question, because I know pretty much nothing about the current EDM scene: Is Bassnectar big enough to play a main stage at Lollapalooza?

North stage? i don't think so. but i honestly don't know a lot about the scene- nor can i differentiate between the sounds of mau5 or nectar.

Even though he can sell out huge venues, he definitely couldn't do main stage. Mainly because he doesn't have some huge setup like Deadmau5, and there's no denying that that brings in a lot of people.

To be fair, I don't think he was necessarily tossing them out. I think he just thought that the people needed to be introduced to American DJ music. Which, quite frankly, I disagree with.

yeah i don't necessarily mean that they were an option and he said "nah, fuck it. i want gleepgloops."
but i do think he's sincere when he says that The Cure aren't relevant enough anymore. and i take issue with him- of all people- making that statement for a 20 year old festival, even if we're talking about its spin-off shows in South America.

it's the second year for lollapalooza chile. you're correct that it is the first year for lollapalooza brasil, but I met people at lolla chile that flew to santiago from buenos aires and other parts of south america, so I think it'll do pretty well in sao paulo.

I'm going to go ahead and ignore Perry.
Was Primal Scream ever rumored/suggested for 2011? Their festival circuit around Europe made me think that maybe they'd show up in the states in 2012 for a small tour, which could mean a mid-day spot at Lolla if they run fests? ACL/Coachella would love them, too.
Same as above for Pulp.

I really don't get why everyone here is in love with The Cure. They weren't even any good when they were in their prime. You really want to hear what they sound like in 2011?
That Perry interview was pretty bad but he did hit some good points to the music industry as a whole. I can relate to what he says when he's talking about the lack of a proper music scene these days, and how the people in the business kind of cannibalize themselves.

Universal says April 2012, another rumor (admittedly without a source) says they're shooting for May. I honestly don't see why they wouldn't, even if the new album ISN'T out til later. Coldplay didn't release MX until 2.5 months after Lollpalooza. Killers are starting down that same trend, playing random live shows, debuting some new material...I can definitely see them hitting the circuit.
I'd bet a whooole bunch on RHCP and/or Killers at this point.

I'd probably do Drake/Metallica/Bjork
Drake vs Killers is contingent upon whether or not Drake is playing more Take Care songs than Killers are Hot Fuss songs.
In terms of subs I would do Band of Horses, Mastodon, and TVoTR.
That isn't contingent upon anything. Those are easy choices and fuck you if you'd do it differently.

There's a reason they keep the EDM (apart from deadmau5) at Perry's. It's not music that you memorize the lyrics to or anything, it's just party music. It's not for everybody. Shit, I am a pretty young guy in decent shape and even I had a hard time staying conscious 3 rows deep at Perry's. I am not at all for expanding the EDM to more stages though. I wouldn't want to take away from some of the awesome indie performances I saw over the weekend.

Best post i've seen in a while. Believe it or not, some people enjoy EDM because they actually like the music, and not because they just like getting shit faced.

Fair point. There's a precedent for Metallica getting lower billing than they deserve at major US fests.
I just think that like, Metallica is too huge to play 2nd fiddle to Red Hot Chili Peppers, who I'm pretty sure people have stopped caring about.
mgignac
11-25-2011, 03:33 PM
I don't think there's any way Metallica are getting billed below RHCP. Doesn't matter how popular you are or if you're Lolla vets (Muse), the "surprise" booking (one that you wouldn't think belonged) for the fest is going to be their biggest selling point.

Not that it isn't obviously a really cool idea, but BS+Est. doesn't seem like the direction C3 are booking towards at ALL with the last two years. '06 or '07 I would have thought he could have had a chance, but it's turned into something that almost entirely targets the 18-30ish fanbases (headliner-wise), and he doesn't fit that at all, even though plenty of people love him.

you meant Paramore > Garbage, right? :)
also, can Garbage headline at this point? i'm ignorant to their popularity. all i know is the guitar hero song and The World Is Not Enough.

well Slayer could- but even during the Big 4 Reunion stuff, they were vocal- especially Kerry- about not liking anything about Metallica and just doing it as a PR move. i can't see them being cool with playing 2nd banana to Metallica at an altrock festival. maybe.
but now that dave and david are joining metallica for a new release next year, i could just see Deth being more open to playing before Metallica.

I still think they could be a 5-6 headliner pretty easily, especially if the album is a success. They haven't released an album since 2005, toured since 2007...
I know this is a shitty way to measure popularity, but they have a similar number of Last.fm listeners as Phoenix and more than MMJ, the Raconteurs, and Wilco.

I still find it really weird that Black Keys are a huge band.
They're not really a huge band, they just play hip-fests & smaller shows and the general public gets to declare themselves "really cool for liking that indie band", which is why they keep popping up everywhere. They're probably ridiculously easy to book because they're the most accessible hipster music out there right now. Tighten Up hitting radio last year was plaid-button-down, thick-rimmed-glasses paradise.
I'm not going to say I don't think their music is good, because I do enjoy a fair bit of it, but I definitely don't understand the hype.

They turned down a headlining slot at Pinkpop with the excuse that 2012 was both a total touring break and a chance to focus on brand new Pearl Jam- I doubt they're going to randomly accept for Lolla if they were even offered. I'm gonna go ahead and guess that they're a 2% chance at this point.

yeah, i'm doing a study on how people act differently on the internet than they do in real life. Its interesting stuff, because online people only know as much as you let them know, so if you want to live out your dream of being a hardass you can do it.

Red Hot Chili Peppers * Jay-Z * The Killers
The Black Keys * Drake * Bjork
RHCP vs Bjork

I think a lineup like this is pretty much in line with where the fest is heading.

Maybe he thinks Drake is likelier to actually appear?
That still doesn't make sense, but uhh, his name is dubstep representation.
I think that they would be more likely to have Drake as a headliner over The Killers because The Killers are similar to the other headliners.

Can't see Drake headlining; swap with Justice and that's pretty in line with where my head is.

11-28-2011, 10:15 AM
I thought Justice could headline before, but this new album sucks and won't blow up this year, so they won't be a headliner. They could headline Perry's though.

RHCP have a show in Finland on August 1st so maybe will dodge a big bullet next year, though they probably will just end up playing on Saturday or Sunday

March is a little early for radius clause though, right?
But if they are playing a Chicago fest this summer, I think North Coast makes a lot of sense as well...

11-28-2011, 11:56 AM
It is early I just doubt that they will do another leg of the tour in America before Summer

Yeah, after seeing the venues for their upcoming tour, definitely not.
Kind of crazy that Justice would headline over Drake since Take Care probably sold more albums in week 1 than Civilization will sell period.

IDK, true popularity wise I think I'd agree, but Justice is definitely still a draw due to the "rare" factor. Especially at fests.
