Daft Punk | Blink-182 | Beastie Boys
The Black Keys | Vampire Weekend | Franz Ferdinand
Reasonings:
Daft Punk- rumored 2011-2012 tour, but havent heard about it in a while. slightly wishful
Blink- new album soon, seems to be tours coming up, havent played lolla but would make sense
Beasties- i feel like they are bound to play sooner or later, why not keep predicting them
Black Keys- i mean they werent there this year, so they must be next year
Vampire Weekend- if there is a new album out by then, then they would make complete sense to make the jump to a headliner
Franz Ferdinand- rumors of a new album and they havent played lolla yet
originally had Modest Mouse at 5 and VW at 6, but i feel like there would be another band headlining who has yet to play lolla, therefore FF at 6
WretchedSkye2113
06-02-2011, 08:26 PM
i dont see black keys coming back soon now that they're headliner worthy.
i know they're lolla's favorite go-to's, but now that they'll take up a top 6 slot, i dont see them coming around every other year.
having said that- best case scenario,
REM * Kanye West * Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Killers * Beck * Queens of the Stone Age
subs:
Death Cab for Cutie * Sonic Youth * Primus
The Decemberists * Mastodon * A Tribe Called Quest
Perry's:
The Prodigy * Fatboy Slim * Massive Attack

Friday- (30 Seconds to Mars) Blink-182 vs. The Black Keys/ Passion Pit (The Flaming Lips)
Saturday- (Lupe Fiasco) Beastie Boys vs. The Strokes (Vampire Weekend)
Sunday- (Primus) Rush vs. No Doubt (Florence and The Machine)

what makes you all think that the beastie boys could be a top 3 headliner?
they could definitely be top 6 but I don't think they're near popular enough nowadays to be top 3
johnd12751
06-02-2011, 08:42 PM
they were top 3 in 2009 but had to cancel because of MCA's throat cancer, the killers took their spot at number 3 and the yeah yeah yeahs were added at #6

good headliners though, possibly no beasties, blink at #3, daft at 2 and rhcp or rush at 1
WampireVeekend

beasties were 5 in 09 i think, but i think theyll have "weaker" headliners next year since they dropped a lot on a big top four. maybe a big #1, but i think we'll get one or two who could be subs.

Yeah but that makes only slightly more sense to me than Ben Harper being a #3 (although BB are immeasurably better). I mean, the Beastie Boys were going to play at some 2-3 thousand person venue here before their last tour got cancelled.

it's impossible to guess (no one was even rumoring coldplay this year until the RS leak like an hour before) but I'll give it a shot:
Radiohead or Tool * RHCP * Jay-Z
Blink-182 * My Chemical Romance * Death Cab for Cutie
They have a big 4 this year so why not next year (Blink will probably sink that low if their new album isn't good)

Didn't say that's what I wanted, that's just what I predicted. And I'm not talking about wild guesses (like the Cure this year) I mean actual plausible possibilities. I was monitoring that semi-confirmed acts thread pretty closely and I don't remember seeing Coldplay seriously rumored ever.

People were considering them just as much as The Cure. In fact, most people thought Coldplay was more likely.

LP is a shit band but plenty of shitheads like them. They don't need the support.
Obviously they'll always have fans because of their first two albums and they were already past their prime by the third one but that last album...I think the word trash is too generous, it was just so bad. It was one of the first albums where I seriously thought 'how could this band possibly release this without being embarrassed?'
That album lost them a lot of fans though. I know a lot of people that are just totally over Linkin Park now. No one wants to go to their shows because like 13 of the 25 songs they play are from the new album (which was their first with no hits btw).
I think LP are past the superstar point now and are just famous.

Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. The Shins
Beyoncé has a new album coming out and has legitimate singing ability ala Lady Gaga so not entirely out of the question. Also, headlining Glastonbury.
I know that there isn't much buzz surrounding The Shins at the moment but their appearance on the Outside Lands lineup is promising enough to make them a headliner depending on the new album.

Before the '98 Lolla tour got shitcanned, they approached three potential headliners. First was Green Day who turned it down to do a headlining tour of their own that summer, then eventually headlined Chicagopalooza in 2010. Second was Nine Inch Nails who turned it down because they wanted to finish their album first, and headlined Chicagopalooza in '08. The third was Marilyn Manson, who said no for the same reason as NIN. They've never done Lollapalooza, are no further outside the Lolla demographic than Eminem or Lady Gaga, and will have an album in full swing by next summer. They wouldn't be a #1 but still easily a headliner.
WretchedSkye2113
06-03-2011, 09:41 AM
did you mean '08 for NIN?
also, Manson actually seems plausible and would be cool. might pull in some nice heavier acts that afternoon (i keep thinking that...never happens)

i dont think anyone was banking on Muse until that Kerrang article came out the week after Lolla 10.
Carl said Foos would play 2011 in May/June of 2010.
Eminem had been mentioned as a possibility.
APC was definitely being argued as the reunited band
MMJ was mentioned just because they're at every fucking festival more than the FLips
i don't think Coldplay was suggested until much later

it's impossible to guess (no one was even rumoring coldplay this year until the RS leak like an hour before) but I'll give it a shot:
Radiohead or Tool * RHCP * Jay-Z
Blink-182 * My Chemical Romance * Death Cab for Cutie
They have a big 4 this year so why not next year (Blink will probably sink that low if their new album isn't good)
tool is not a #1
tool would be #4 on that list ahead of blink

yeah but they're touring that album THIS YEAR in all the major markets including chicago. are they the type of band that is popular enough to do another circuit a year later on the strength of the same album? i doubt it.

This isn't true. They got PJ in 2007 and their only other shows that year were in Europe and a pre-show. They got Soundgarden last year and they had only played 1 club show and a pre-show in more than a decade.

Dude, you couldn't be more wrong. They just DID that. They toured twice in '07 then again in '09 under all for one album and then a b-sides release.
Just because a band isn't on your radar doesn't mean they don't exist. They sold out Northerly Island twice without having released any new music in 4 years! They also headlined Allstate with just one opener on the bill in 04 and they've come out with 3 albums since then. They are a big act and have a huge draw.
fishkingpies
06-07-2011, 10:50 PM
so in other words, they're one of those bands that tours every year. looking at past dates, that seems to be the case.
and just because i don't listen to incubus doesn't mean i don't know anything about them. i know they are a "big deal." hence why i said they'd be a headliner.
anyway, i just don't think they're a good prediction. possible, yes. but it doesn't seem like c3 is itching to get them.

Also the fact that Incubus and Big Boi are way too high, the Flaming Lips probably are too, Justice needs an awesome new album to be a headliner (which is actually the most plausible of anything on that lineup), and the only festival I see Britney having done is Rock in Rio 7 years ago.

Just curious, does anyone know about how much a Radiohead/Daft Punk type band charges to headline a festival? And how much a My Morning Jacket level band charges? It would make it a lot easier to speculate.
The difference is probably a few hundred thousand for a big indie act like MMJ and Phoenix, up to 1+ million for huge acts like Radiohead. Coachella paid several million to Prince for his headlining show.
In a lot of ways you can treat headlining acts at festivals like you would a non festival headlining act. The amount they get probably is somewhat close to the amount that the artist would draw at a Chicago stop, plus some. So for someone like Gaga who has an average of 75 dollar tickets and sells 20k at the United Center, the minimum I imagine c3 paid her is 1.5 million for her set.
LollaDan
06-08-2011, 08:16 PM
What would be your guesses for the headliner payouts for this year?
nikolajz1
06-08-2011, 09:19 PM
I'd imagine Eminem is in the 2 million range just based off of how rare he plays and his popularity. Foo Fighters:1.2 million, Coldplay:1.5 million, Muse: 1 million, MMJ: 300k, DeadMau5: 250k. Just guesses though.
LollaDan
06-08-2011, 09:32 PM
Sounds pretty solid. And I suppose a band like Arctic Monkeys would probably get 100-150k (in the U.S.), Two Door Cinema Club would probably get around 15-25k, and Crystal Castles 50k?
Or does that sound off? Just trying to understand the economics of music festivals.
Also, speculation with numbers is more fun than speculation without numbers.

as far as the costs of headliners & such i actually came across an article once that listed out the prices for a lot of coachella headliners (i think i read it in 08 or 09). only one i can remember was the cure who were paid $600k to headline in 04. i heard that arcade fire are making $1mil to headline fests this year but i don't know how legit that is.

wow 600k seems low for The Cure. I expected that to be higher.

from what i remember, they were one of the lowest on the list. bjork & the '99 headliners (tool, ratm, beck) were the only ones who cost less. even jack johnson was more expensive. but remember that was '04. i'm sure they went up quite a bit when they headlined in '09.

could weezer be a possible headliner next year? idk if theyd be a top 3 but i think they would be a solid 4 5 or 6

Switch QOTSA with Snow Patrol and that's one of the most solid guesses I've seen in this thread. Pavement's future is uncertain and The Cure is iffy but all around good speculation.
pavement's future is quite certain.

And I suppose a band like Arctic Monkeys would probably get 100-150k (in the U.S.), Two Door Cinema Club would probably get around 15-25k, and Crystal Castles 50k?
numbers.

But that's for two shows so it's really like 500k per.

The world after the second rapture, apparently.

Just speculating that they fill the Pop/Rap headliner role of Gaga and Eminem...assuming Kanye is not on the list. Rhianna - no thanks. Beyonce - maybe. Perhaps they are #3, but a reunited No Doubt would bring a lot of people in IMHO

to be fair, given that lineup, they probably would be 2 or 3.

If No Doubt plays Lolla they are at minimum a 4
Could even be a 3

id say SOAD would be above them, but other than that #3 is reasonable.
that's a pretty big lineup too consider how well rem, no doubt, soad and incubus shows have been selling.
(quality is another story)

Anyway if I could see R.E.M, Fleet Foxes and Massive Attack I guess I would be happy

hmm not sure what i would do.
definitely have to see REM and SoaD.
have seen No Doubt and Massive Attack but both were phenomenal shows and would definitely see them again.
haven't seen Incubus but i like their first album or 2 and wouldn't mind seeing them.
...could take a nap during Fleet Foxes. so that's always nice.

CG listened to a good amount of Nu-Metal back in the day:p

I wouldn't consider SOAD to be nu-metal but whatever
WretchedSkye2113
06-09-2011, 09:49 PM
they came out during the nu-metal era and had distorted guitars, therefore they are labeled nu-metal.
^ typical way to determine the genre.
but i agree with you, lolladan, they don't fit that mold.

Think SOAD will even still be together by the time Lollapalooza 2012 happens?
WretchedSkye2113
06-09-2011, 09:56 PM
possible.
all they've said is that they're touring this summer because they miss playing together and seeing their fans.
haven't said if there's a full world tour afoot or if there's any material to be written.
considering how poorly Scars on Broadway and Serj's solo record tanked though, me thinks money will keep them together for some time.

Yeah they basically said 'we'll see'.
But I watched their entire show on the Rock am Ring webcast and they put on a great show and seemed to be having fun. Hopefully they stick around.

in the fall when people were speculating them for this year people were putting them in the 4 or 5 spot. I dont know SOAD at all so did they do something to all of the sudden bump them to a 2 or 3?
LollaDan
06-10-2011, 11:07 AM
SOAD was huge, pretty much as big as Linkin Park was, and now there's extra buzz with the re-union so they'd definitely be a top 3 unless the lineup was absolutely stacked.
They're second album sold twelve million copies. They were the first band since the Beatles to have two number one albums in the same year. They sell out arena tours and are headlining Rock am Ring and Download this year.
They're definitely worthy of a top spot.

SoaD is more of an ozzfest band than a lolla band.

Saw them at Ozzfest once.
I never would have considered RATM a Lolla band (certainly not a Lolla Chicago Park District band, anyway), nor Tool, until it happened

Tool was odd, but RATM is well loved by lolla-crowd folk.

I was trying to cover that a bit by adding the Chicago Park District bit.
The idea of that type of show in Grant Park was really outside of what I expected the city to allow.

If taking a few years off turns Soundgarden into a #1 band then there is no doubt in my mind that SOAD taking a few years off makes them at least a #3 or #4, probably higher if it is their only festival appearance.
LOL
Anyone remember when ChiCity said there was no possible way RATM or NIN could ever play Lolla just a few weeks before the '08 headliners leaked? LOLOLOLOL

we were speculating SoaD to be a 4-6 because the supposed top 3 had already been leaked.
