just wondering is there a certain time when we start hearing of concrete evidence of who will headline the next year? i assume its after the festival is over, but i didn't know if itd be closer to christmas or possibly right after it ends we'd hear who c3 is in talks with. i didn't join til february this year and it seems like it was already known about muse foos and em by then

The #1 (or in this year's case #2) headliner is usually pretty predictable about a year in advance (i.e. Radiohead, RHCP, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Green Day)

Audiobully

You can also just fill in the blanks:

South Stage Headliners
Legacy: RHCP/Tool/Rage/Radiohead/Pearl Jam/Soundgarden/etc.
Pop Act: Muse x2/The Killers/Lady Gaga/Coldplay (on the north though)
Hippity Hop: Kanye x2/Beastie Boys/Eminem

North Stage
another legacy act: Ben Harper/NIN/Jane's Addiction/The Strokes
major indie act: Modest Mouse/Racs/Arcade Fire/MMJ
Out of the blue headliner: Interpol/Kings Of Leon/Phoenix/Deadmaufive

hmmm. if it's a "legacy" act, when did radiohead play the traveling festival? same for harper and the strokes. or by "legacy" do you mean an alternative rock band that's been around for some time?

Also if we are going to call any headliner in 2007 a pop act then it should be Daft Punk

Let me know when Phoenix has a platinum album in the US, 6 #1 bilboard alt songs, and is played on q101 at least once a day. Phoenix is one of my top 10 favorite bands and there's no way they are bigger than 30seconds.

RCarr11

I'm not saying that 30 Seconds to Mars couldn't headline. I just think that Phoenix is a bigger overall draw. More people would be interested in seeing Phoenix play 1901 then see 30 Seconds to Mars play whatever shit that they play. 30STM have a niche, but as a whole, more people would be more interested in seeing Phoenix.

oasisfan
06-16-2011, 01:18 PM
but 30stm niche tends to be alt radio listeners which is what the majority of lolla goers fall into

c1916
06-16-2011, 01:23 PM
At the risk of adding to any "shit taste" commentary, I have to admit to seeing 30STM recently at a radio station show. They were unfathomably awful. I enjoyed them the last couple of times I saw them, including their Lolla afternoon. Playing portions of songs, extended rants, bringing people up on stage, playing to the cameras, etc. I could be wrong, but I got the impression that perhaps Jared is "over it" and he appeared wasted throughout the show. After sitting through that 75 minutes, there is no way I can see them pulling a headline slot at Lolla. He/They really seem to need a break.

nikkirkpatrick
06-16-2011, 01:31 PM
it's not about record sales, it's about venue size. I don't know or care to look up what size venues each band is playing, but just because someone buys your record, it doesn't mean they will go to your show.

oasisfan
06-16-2011, 01:34 PM
but the people that buy the albums are more likely to go to the show than the people who have just heard the name of the band, so record sales could at least be used as an indicator of who is a bigger draw

I saw 30stm headline a 20k person one day fest a year and a half ago. They had a pretty good performance then, can't say if they still do, but they certainly are very popular. Of course they won't be touring next year so they won't be at Lolla.

their last three shows in chicago were selling out the aragon last year (them headlining with mutemath), selling out the aragon this year (them headlining with anaberlin) on and headlining q101 jamboree

considering that the fanbase is batshit insane and would travel across the country to see them headline a night of lolla... it seems very likely that they could be the "out of the blue headliner" next year (keep in mind that they were billed 4th at lolla chile this year)

so what would your top 6 be then?

What I'd want:

The Cure*R.E.M.*Neil Young
Wilco*The Chemical Brothers*TV on the Radio

What we'll (probably) get:

Red Hot Chili Peppers*Kanye*Some shit pop act
Beastie Boys*Death Cab For Cutie*Traditional "When did they get big enough to headline" headliner

Hell, Furthur could show up. They love playing Chicago.

Krentistthedentist
06-21-2011, 05:08 PM
Worth noting that TV on the Radio is like 17th or something on ACLs lineup this year.
Also, after the ACL lineup , it might be time to start getting used to 4 bigguns and then a substantial dropoff from C3

Broc1123

The 4 BIG headliners thing is bad. 3 and 3 makes so much more sense. But here is one I just came up with that seems to make some sense.

Red Hot Chili Peppers * Stevie Wonder * Kanye West
The Cure * Vampire Weekend * Fleet Foxes

RHCP vs. Fleet Foxes
Stevie Wonder vs. Vampire Weekend
Kanye West vs. The Cure

But what's the point of putting matchups on here when they do shit like Muse vs Coldplay now?

Irving_Red
06-25-2011, 12:16 AM
Totally threw Metric on there just because I like them. Sufjan might be better in that spot? It was a pretty random setup I patched together, though I do think The Hives subheadlining for BB would be good, considering Pelle talked about putting out some rap/hip-hop on the new album (as awful as that sounds). I could at least see them closing one of the smaller stages like Grove.

I absolutely agree that they SHOULDN'T be but the last few years the 6 spot has kind of been a reach that would never have headlined just one year prior. C3's formula for that spot has kind of been to a put a trendy, middle of the road, hipsterish band that has been overhyped as of late. Phoenix, YYYs for example. Mau5 is a little different (but not much.) I would argue that by next year Fleet Foxes will fit into that spot perfectly.
