View Full Version : It Starts Now: Volume Four - 2012 Lollapalooza Headliner Speculation

new weekly prediction that won't be true......
Radiohead, RHCP, Throne, The Cure, Black Keys, Bjork.
yeah because lollapalooza will probably bill the coachella #3 headliner at 5, bring back two former #1s.. and watch the throne
2/6 and were lucky.

i feel that C3 has to have more money in the bank since 2008. Its not entirely LULZ. maybe having both Jay and kanye.
Radiohead is a wash. Rage=RHCP. Bjork and Black Keys can't be that much. NIN probably cheaper than the Cure.

Two washes and your fake line-up being a lot more expensive in every other way.

Also they have more in the bank and they also know they need to do a lot less to sell out the fest given the current market. Should they dig in and spend more or spend less and still sell the fest out?

You missed the point. I was showing an example of how a top-line Coachella act can be billed 5th at Lollapalooza. I didn't say one was bigger than the other.
Driftwood
02-03-2012, 03:59 PM
They didn't say top line anyway. They said #3.
I have no idea why they put The Strokes as a co-headliner but nothing about their set says headliner. It was like every other act that has sub-headlined at Coachella.
Point is The Strokes can't carry a day at Coachella or any major. The Black Keys can now.

Did you not look at that lineup of that festival we went to last June? Granted, Auerbach gets the hometown bump now, but it was a pretty large divide.
Driftwood
02-03-2012, 04:33 PM
I fully expect someone like Florence + The Machine / Passion Pit as a cheap #6. Or I guess an EDM act (but not Justice).
I'm leaning towards Metallica as the #1 but Black Keys and Jack White on top of that seems like too much rawk. WTT fits better in terms of contrasting but I don't see it happening.

02-03-2012, 08:11 PM
Yeah that seems a little bit more realistic except they will probably book a non edm act to close Perry's against SHM like Cudi with The Mau5 last year.
WretchedSkye2113
02-03-2012, 08:16 PM
...well, i got nothing on that.
you guys were discussing how popular that one new hip hop guy is who i've never heard of. could he do it?
also, to reply to your earlier post, yeah my top 5 is ridiculously optimistic.
i don't think we'll get the cure or bjork. we'll get some big european name, but i doubt we get either of those 2, let alone both.
metallica and beck seem highly probably to me.
the throne makes sense for the pop/hiphop #1 slot, but it could be a slew of pop stars (rihanna, kesha, etc) or other hip hop acts that are more dormant this year, a la eminem's big announcement last year. maybe the dre/snoop team. hell, it could be an outkast reunion being kept quiet. (oplzoplzoplzoplz)
concertgoer
02-03-2012, 08:25 PM
I think an electropop act like Miike Snow or Passion Pit could close Perry's against your untz untz headliner Maybe I am being way too optimistic, but I really think we are either getting WTT or Ye or Jay solo. I do love your Outkast reunion though.
WretchedSkye2113
02-03-2012, 08:27 PM
i mean WTT (or separate shows by either) makes the most sense and its what we have the most info on thus far.
it's still just not a lot to go on though so i'm throwing the idea of other hiphop headliners that can pull a #1 slot. but WTT is what i want and what is currently the frontrunning possibility.
but god would Outkast be fun.
concertgoer
02-03-2012, 08:30 PM
Granted I am a total Coachella fanboy, but I think they would be the first fest to get their reunion show. I would be happy to be wrong though.

02-03-2012, 09:11 PM
so what about my sig now? shm in the deadmau5 slot and guetta playing perry's?
David Guetta is also a pretty massive act for Perry's. Pretty Lights was a Perry's headliner last year and he is 6th on his day at Ultra. Justice and Guetta are both headlining Ultra and Bassnectar is 4th on his day. Seems like it would be a huge upgrade in terms of popularity and they might need to expand Perry's again.
If Beck (or another similar band) was against Metallica and Guetta he would have a tiny crowd.
31_Shoot
02-03-2012, 09:26 PM
then I'm 100% for it. beck on the north side with a small crowd would be fantastic

I feel like Justice could possibly close out North stage. The hype around their hiatus/return seems to make them a possible electronic headliner (Ultra slot). Although, I still feel like SHM or something worse like Tiesto will be the EDM headliner. SHM would be a big deal since I don't think they have never come to Chicago.
Also, yes to The Hives. I get the feeling that they will be touring with Refused (they are sharing a bill in New York) so I would expect them to both be at Lolla.

Can someone explain why Bruce Springsteen, a mainstream '70s classic or "dad" rock act, is being discussed for an alternative music festival targeted at young people? He can easily sell out stadiums, and reportedly is in discussion to do so at Wrigley Field in September.

This is an irrelevant discussion, but the statement that Coldplay is the biggest band in the world is utterly ridiculous. The following are unquestionably bigger bands: U2, the Rolling Stones, Bruce and the E Street Band, Paul McCartney. So may be most or all of the following, at least in the US: Madonna, Bon Jovi, Roger Waters, the Eagles, Kenny Chesney, Gaga, Taylor Swift, Eminem and/or Jay.
Radiohead is a smaller band, commercially, but is more critically-respected, like other bands that have headlined over Coldplay.

You didn't understand my point. All hiphop music is essentially alternative music, if your frame of reference is '70s classic rock, and hiphop has been part of Lollapalooza, an alternative rock festival, since the beginning. She's largely derivative dance-pop, with a large teen audience, but her persona play and fashion-orientation and adult/gay themes have reaped her a large audience in your hipper music fan precincts, which have become increasingly dance-oriented (as has Lolla) over the last few years. To the extent that the terms mean anything anymore ("alternative" probably died in the early-mid '90s), she is arguably both mainstream and alternative simultaneously, just like a lot of the acts that top the festival bills.

C3 doesn't need Bruce to sell out ACL either, but they want him for Austin at some point. Maybe even this year. They aren't trying to get him for Lolla.

I mean the ACL thing is probably the best post he's made so far (though I'm not buying it until I actually see Bruce on the line-up - still seems awful pricey for a C3 city based fest). I do think ACL has a more defined aesthetic so yes it probably does mean he is a little more likely to play that fest. Lolla still isn't alternative.
