Depeche Mode's audience might be "old" to someone in their 20s, but it's nothing like an audience for Bruce, Tom Petty, Stevie Wonder, the Eagles, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Furthur, etc.

This was an especially good post that I can totally get behind. The point is, there is no precedent at Chicagopalooza for something like Bruce, Stevie, Eagles, Petty, etc headlining. I think a case could be made for Neil due to his incredible versatility and Furthur cos WSP.

This probably doesn't need to be said, but obviously MCA's health is still an issue. No one really knows if/when they'll be able to perform again. If we knew for sure he'd be up to it, they'd be a top candidate.

I'd also like to remind everyone that there were no hiphop headliners in 2005, 2007, 2009 (due to Beastie Boys dropping out), and 2010. In 7 years, Kanye and Eminem have been the only hiphop headliners. There's no such thing as a token hiphop headliner at Chicagopalooza.

But I can't see Furthur playing, even if WSP did. The latter arises out of the early 90s jamband scene that arose at the same time as Lollapalooza and conceivably might have been included in the first lineups had there not been a separate H.O.R.D.E. tour. There is certainly nothing punk and not much aggressive about the jambands, but they were DIY concerns, and are quite "alternative" in that respect. The Dead were as well in their time, but then became a stadium and "classic" rock act, along with others from their generation who did not get a critical rebirth with Gen X as Neil did via his collaboration with Pearl Jam, etc. WSP (or Phish), yes, Furthur, no.

I'd also like to remind everyone that there were no hiphop headliners in 2005, 2007, 2009 (due to Beastie Boys dropping out), and 2010. In 7 years, Kanye and Eminem have been the only hiphop headliners. There's no such thing as a token hiphop headliner at Chicagopalooza.

This is true but I just think that with the potential headliners that are out there for this year a hip-hop headliner is pretty likely. Kanye/Jay/WTT, Drake, Lil Wayne, and even the Beasties are all big names who have released big albums over the past year.

That's true. I just think it bears noting that people shouldn't feel forced to predict THE hiphop headliner when, in reality, we've had more lineups without a top 6 hiphop act than lineups with a top 6 hiphop act. (Once again, I will say it would have been 4/7 if Beasties had been able to play in 2009).

I agree with that. But there has been a pop-friendly (i.e. white-audience-friendly) rap or dance music headliner in every year since 2006:
06 - Kanye (and the Chili Peppers)
07 - Daft Punk
08 - Kanye (and RATM)
09 - the Beastie Boys and Depeche Mode
10 - Gaga
11 - Eminem and Deadmau5

I anticipate a medium-to-large dance act being on the 2nd line of the bill. I don't think that act alone is large enough to meet the standard set above, nor would be two such acts. I would therefore expect a medium-to-big-name hiphop headliner, probably either the Beastie Boys, whose appearance remains (and may continue to remain) outstanding, or something involving Jay-Z, who has already headlined Coachella, Bonnaroo, All Points West, Glastonbury, Isle of Wight, Oxegen, Wireless, and Pemberton. I don't see Rihanna or Lil' Wayne, say, coming first, if ever.

I think the bigger distinction is that most of those bands fit in with a modern young top-40 listening crowd. It's hard to make any sort of connection between Depeche Mode and Eminem/Gaga. If you must pick one act from the '09 lineup for your argument, I think The Killers fit best.
