It's evolved over the past 4 years into a completely different fest.

You guys can stop acting like the fest isn't becoming poppier any time now.
And I'm not saying that as a slight on the festival (I thought that 2010 ,at least, had a completely appropriate mixture of pop and things that aren't pop and could have been a great template for the festival going forward), just as a matter of fact. I'm sure there are a number of people who attended in 2005 that want nothing to do with the fest anymore because it is so different.

I bet they hate that it is more crowded. Headliners are bigger. Gaga probably would never have been booked had she not been a Lolla alum. Is there more pop throughout the line-up (smaller pop music type acts)? Seems like you are judging fests based on 5 bands again.

They would absolutely book Sonic Youth again (if the opportunity arises). They just wouldn't be big enough to headline now.
Again it seems like you are basing the fest off its headliners.

From a business perspective, judging the fest based on (basically) 5 bands is not all that inappropriate since the headliners account for so much revenue. I am sure 80%+ of people who buy single day tickets do so based on who that evening's headliner is. And the point is, 2005 was not geared towards Eminem fans or Coldplay fans or deadmau5 fans or Muse fan or probably even Foo Fighters fans.

The fest hasn't changed at all since moving to Grant Park. Each and every year, they fill out a bill from available touring acts sprinkled with acts that aren't actively touring but are available for the right price. That is all.
EDIT: Then of the acts available at the right price, they pick on affordability plus attractiveness to the attendees.

Friday: GZA (performing Liquid Swords), Slint (performing Spiderland), Sonic Youth (performing Daydream Nation)
Saturday (Mainstages): Battles, Califone, Cat Power and Dirty Delta Blues Band), Clipse, Grizzly Bear, Iron & Wine, Mastodon, Yoko Ono, The Twilight Sad, Voxtrot
Saturday (Tent): Beach House, Girl Talk, Dan Deacon, Fujiya & Miyagi, Ken Vandermark's Powerhouse Sound, Oxford Collapse, Professor Murder, William Parker Quartet
Sunday (Mainstages): De La Soul, Deerhunter, Junior Boys, Jamie Lidell, Stephen Malkmus, Menomena, The New Pornographers, of Montreal, The Ponys, The Sea and Cake
Sunday (Tent): Brightblack Morning Light, Cadence Weapon, The Cool Kids, Craig Taborn's Junk Magic, The Field, Fred Lonberg-Holm's Lightbox Orchestra, Klaxons, Nomo
They got rid of the classic albums but 3/4 of this line-up together at Pitchfork 2012 with a couple of bigger names wouldn't be that unbelievable.

Maybe I should have been more specific and said Lollapalooza is more "inclusive" now.

Indie has gotten more mainstream. They've gotten headliners that would have been fine playing the fest earlier in the day (when they were earlier in their career trajectories) and would have fit the aesthetic of the fest perfectly.

I think this is a good start, but I would remove the following possibilities:
Black Sabbath - too old and the tour may not even happen
The Black Keys - playing multiple in-radius arena shows including the United Center this Spring
Drake - availability indicates he is not on the bill
Nicki - same
Passion Pit - not headliner material
(maybe) Vampire Weekend - they'll 2nd-line headline at some point, but I doubt it will happen until they release a new record, which I don't expect this Summer
I wouldn't put Beck in the same category as Bjork and The Cure. Mumford could go in either of those categories.
And I wouldn't separate MIA and Rihanna from the male MC's. The former is a good call, assuming her album is out in time.
I would add the following possibilities, not necessarily in order of probability: Radiohead, Tool (yes I know APC played last year), blink-182, Phish, Swedish House Mafia, Skrillex, Justice, the Avett Brothers, the Stone Roses, Blur.

Jay-Z and Kanye West * Metallica * Daft Punk * The Black Keys
Bjork * Mumford and Sons *
The Roots - Mastodon - Cut Copy - The Avett Brothers - Portishead - Primus
Mastodon > Metallica vs Bjork < Portishead
Cut Copy > Daft Punk vs The Black Keys < Primus
The Roots > Jay-Z and Kanye West vs Mumford and Sons < The Avett Brothers
WretchedSkye2113

oasisfan
02-07-2012, 02:04 AM
I feel like the big 4 US festivals go for Daft Punk each year and Lolla I think will be the one to get them again. Mastodon could be switched out for QotSa but I think Mastodon is more likely. Portishead I really don't know about, they just seem like the perfect lead in to Bjork and thus why I put them in. Granted I doubt most of this happens just cause of price alone. I'd guess maybe 2/6 of the headliners we'll get. Subs idk sometimes they make perfect sense and sometimes you get Cee Lo Green.
WretchedSkye2113
02-07-2012, 02:07 AM
Hangout is making me think Coheed, who is a lolla-friendly band, could sub for metallica.
portishead seems too big to me to sub, but i think we have them as a 6:30 in our lollaboard fest lineup, so what do i know.
and if (huge if) punk is actually playing that june fest here, then lolla is obvzly a no go.
oasisfan
02-07-2012, 02:19 AM
yeah Coheed would be a possible sub into Metallica.
Portishead I wasn't particularly sure of the popularity level and was thinking they were a sub in LxLb so I went with that.
Daft Punk is definitely the most glaring no fucking way thing about the prediction and they always will be, but that fest in June sounds sooooo fake. I mean idk maybe its real and if it is, I'll go to it just to see Daft Punk, but I don't believe its real at all.

Aerosmith just announced they're going on tour in June. Assuming the tour lasts until August, I don't think they're a long shot. I know there is no precedent for a classic rock act at Lolla but Aerosmith seems relevant enough to a somewhat younger audience that they could be a possibility.

my stab at it. knowing the Roo lineup will help though.
Friday: Franz Ferdinand -> (Miike Snow) -> The Cure v Swedish House Mafia <- (AVICII) <- Florence & The Machine
Perry's: Justice Grove: Silversun Pickups
Saturday: Tenacious D -> (Coheed & Cambria) Metallica v Bjork <- (Mogwai) <- M83
Perry's: Bassnectar Grove: Andrew Bird
Sunday: The Roots -> (The Weeknd) -> Jay-Z & Kanye West v Beck <- (Chris Cornell) <- The Shins
Perry's: David Guetta Grove: Godspeed You! Black Emperor
I would lose my fucking mind if that lineup was any where close to how it's going to be.

I hope WTT doesn't play so that way I can see Beck

i'd go WTT but i'd be torn up on the inside.
That would be the worst conflict of all time.

Yeah, I can imagine that would have been rough.
I should have said the most awful conflict in my time of going to lolla.

DigitalistArcadeGardenofSoundFire was pretty bad.
That was rough but arcade fire ended up being a pretty easy choice for me.

Unless you were awesome enough to go the Vic, Soundgarden was the correct choice.

You're much better off suggesting one or the other.

Think you're missing a #1 or #2, and Audio's list has me convinced there will be no Drake.
