Would be fucking amazing if true. I want to believe.

Yes.
Tiesto is too big for anyone to ever believe in 800 million years that he would play Perry's
Not even Lollaleaks will try to pass that off as truth.
SHM is probably bigger than Tiesto at the moment.

Exceptions prove the well-known rule. I'm sure Radiohead has a lot more leverage than Bassnectar.

The fact is that the vast majority of artists fit within the clause, which is "enforced" strongly enough to be the subject of a State AG investigation.
MGMT probably got around it because Andrew is good friends with Perry.
MMJ I don't know about, but I'd imagine that it was waived for them because they have an obsessive, jamband-like fanbase that has no problem attending repeat shows in a short timeframe.

With or without a radius clause, it's not smart for a band to play Lollapalooza and another Chicago venue in close proximity.
It's not a good value for Lolla to book a band if 5,000 of their biggest fans just saw them a month ago and similarly it's not a good idea for a band to try to sell 5,000 tickets if 50,000 people recently saw them at a festival in the same city.

Everyone stop mentioning a band or two. We are discussing it because Soundset really thinks the radius clause is in effect six months before hte fest so Bassnectar and Korn are affected by it. It probably "applies" to most bands purely out of convenience (why hit Chicago earlier when you can just do it at Lolla) but the reality is probably about 1/4 of the bands play a Chicago show within six months of the fest. Do you think it's going to stop Goyte and M83 playing?

Lollapalooza says you can't play for a total of 9 months in the market – 6 months before and 3 months after. And they define the market as 300 miles around Chicago: that includes Madison, Milwaukee, Detroit, Ann Arbor."
Lets count the number of acts on the line-up that have a date within 300 miles of Chicago 3 days prior or 3 days after the fest. I'm betting it is at least a half.

There are many reasons to play a show and a fest in a short time frame, as illustrated by the existence of night shows at many festivals, for one thing. The non-festival show is often longer (especially for bands like MMJ that play at great length - up to four hours at times) and will include deeper cuts than a short festival set designed for a wider audience. It therefore better serves hardcore fans who also may not want to pay for a festival ticket just to see their band, not to mention the band itself in some cases, which may prefer playing in a different venue and at a different time of day. There's also the matter of festival set conflicts. A band is probably going to lose some of its potential audience at a festival to a competing group or otherwise disadvantageous timeslot.
This presumes an act that already has some substantial popularity. A more up and coming band can help build buzz for a festival appearance with a well-received show earlier in the year.
And of course if the band has sold out a show prior to the festival or reasonably anticipates selling it out, it has no lost ticket sales to worry about. The band might book a pre-festival show in a smaller venue for just that purpose.

Metallica, Beck, and either Sigur Ros or Jack White would be a lovely weekend.
having said this, i don't think we're getting jack white (unless he does a show with beck like my sig says! weeeeeeeeee)

That would be so unbelievably weak, it's a #1, a #5, and 4 #6's.

Yeah it's obviously not going to be the top six
Krentistthedentist

SP could be a four or five. So could Beck.
JW, SR, and SHM are all sixes.

dij:
that's why it's not happening #qualityvquantity
it's lacking a pop act and fad bands.

They're all headline worthy and 5 of them make good music. Who gives what number they should be at?

Yeah they wouldn't achieve another sellout this year with that group of headliners.
If Sigur Ros is at Lolla but they play before it gets dark out I'm going to be disappointed.
They're probably way too big for the Grove right?

no argument that'd be a great 6 for lots of us.
doesn't mean it's gonna appeal to the masses and c3's target crowds though.

Jonsi played at Coachella during the middle of the day so I don't that Sigur Ros has to play after dark.

Yeah derpmongerer I don't think Dij is arguing that the bands are shit
Just that C3 would never book a top 6 that light
