one of the people who posts a lot here has the board name of "buzzword." then he started posting under the name "count of monte disco." every time someone new comes along, a lot of people here think it is just buzzword / count of monte disco posting under a new alias, and usually it is not.

I'm surprised Wilco hasn't come up more often here. They just got confirmed for the Forecastle Festival in July, so they'll definitely be back stateside between all their European festivals.

Chicago staple, relatively new album and they haven't been there since 2008. The Chicago residency in December doesn't help, but if we're speculating I think they'd be on my list.

Can Tool be removed from this discussion? they seem a bit controversial.
Hey how about that Korn ft Skrillex shit? Would they be booked a show? I heard rumors of Korn having their own show at a stage AND a show w/ Skrillz @ Perry's. Whats about that? anyone?

That rumor came from this board, when speculating on bullshit information from Lollaleaks. Put it out of your mind. Korn will be mainstage, with or without Skrillex, in a world where C3 would book Korn at all.

he's named after an actual performer who plays a bunch of instruments at one time by himself. we saw him open for mickey hart a couple of years ago when they first put a street festival on sheffield north of addison while the cubs were out of town. these days, the "real" that1guy is touring as an opening act for buckethead, a guitarist who used to be a non-original member of guns and roses.

From Wilco's Facebook page just a few minutes ago:

Wilco will play 3 festivals in Europe this August: Way Out West, Goteborg Sweden on 10/8; Haldern Pop, Rees-Haldern Germany on 11/8; Wilderness Festival, Oxfordshire, UK on 12/8

Sounds like they'll still be stateside during Lolla. I could see them headlining... Their last album did really well and their "Shrinking Tour" was a super hot run of shows with a lot of hardcore fans left without at ticket. I could see them being a draw as a headliner in 2012. Don't know if it'll happen but it's definitely possible.

I honestly don't see them being anything other than a headliner, if they played. While knowledgeable Rock listeners know that this Billy and Friends shtick isn't great, the avg lolla ticket buyer just sees Billy at the helm and think nothing of it.

You do realize Billy wrote all their material on his own w/ the exception of I think Soma on Siamese Dreams and the last track on Mellon Collie ? I know the concept of the original lineup playing together is ideal, but the skills are w/ Billy.

I think they would make a good #6, but I def think they would headline. They would be a good Friday North stage.

Look up their wiki or liner notes if you have the albums. Gish, Siamese Dreams, and Mellon Collie were all written 99% by Corgan. He even laid all the bass tracks on Gish.

thombjorke.
03-01-2012, 10:36 PM
He didn't play the drums though, and Chamberlain was an important part of the band.

And even if Chamberlain was part of it, nothing can really match how awesome it would be to have all four original members playing, regardless of how much they each contributed to the records. It's a nostalgia/romantic thing.

pieman27

Yea original lineup would definitely be South stage, Billy just hates James for some reason. He said in an interview last year he wishes he had just kicked james out and sent jimmy to rehab instead of breaking the band up. I wasn't a fan of the electronic path they were headed down, so by the time they broke up I didn't care.

Look up their wiki or liner notes if you have the albums. Gish, Siamese Dreams, and Mellon Collie were all written 99% by Corgan. He even laid all the bass tracks on Gish.

Not what I was what.-ing, but thanks for re-learning me something.

He didn't play the drums though, and Chamberlain was an important part of the band.

And even if Chamberlain was part of it, nothing can really match how awesome it would be to have all four original members playing, regardless of how much they each contributed to the records. It's a nostalgia/romantic thing.

The idea might be awesome, but the reality is that Smashing Pumpkins weren't really that great of a live band. If Billy were to go on another one of his rants, then a set from them might be interesting for a bit in a trainwreck sort of way.

This is true. I know that a full generation feels like they missed out on not being able to see SP live. All I can say is have you ever had that one person you've always wanted to meet in real life, only to find out they're a complete douche? I love SP's recorded material. Love it. But listen to a bootleg sometime. It won't just be the quality that lets you down.

I had the pleasure of seeing SP on the second leg of the MC&TIS tour and the horror of seeing them on the Machina tour. Even at their best, they were okay. Meanwhile, a band like SSPU has played their hearts out everytime like it's their last show.

SP will always deliver an okay show, and if James and Jimmy come back into the fold, I'll probably see that for the nostalgia factor. But temper your expectations. Billy simply isn't what he once was, and doing sweet FA for 11 years really hasn't given him new drive to do much in the music business.

They still sound fucking sick. Sorry if they're not gonna be your monkeys 20 years into it. Chris's voice just gets better and better.

And Smashing Pumpkins suck. Yea some of the recordings are really cool, but that's cuz they're a totally manufactured band. Someone's turning the trash you hear live into something that's actually tolerable. We really wanna see a band that was hardly anything more than a pop culture fad to begin with, 20 years after their prime?

I will say that Soundgarden was a letdown...especially after Greenday. I'm not a big Greenday fan anymore, but wow did they put on a hell of a show. Billy Joe is on Dave Grohl's level of working a crowd, you could tell they were having a blast. Then Soundgarden come out the next night and end 10min early after Greenday ran over. They didn't look nearly as miserable as the Cars did. I will say that they looked just as nervous as they did at the pre-lolla show I went to that Thursday.

I agree on SP live. I saw them at a Christmas show where you just had to donate some canned goods to get in about 2 years before they broke up and once during the mid 90's. It sounded like they were forced onto the stage at gunpoint and were dragging themselves through the songs.

Pfft, this was Usenet, we didn't even have a Web to crawl. But the oldest version of this I could find was from 1996:

3.7 Why do people think they suck live?
This is an old debate brought up by people who have only heard [Billy Corgan]'s more
hyper/screamy concerts. The point people try (and fail) to make is that BC
sucks live, because he screams, and "it sounds like shit." Well, some peo-
ple like how Billy sounds when he screams, it gives it a twist. We can't
expect him to whisper and be heard as he does in the studio. There
have been plenty of shows, even non-acoustic ones, in which his voice is
the same "nice, clean, mellow" voice we all know from the albums. It's
performances like the Disarm at MTV Music Awards that upset some people,
because they can't handle anything that's different than what they expect.
If it sounded exactly the same as the CD, what would be the point of going
to see them, other than the fact that it's likely to be louder?
Another comment from the D'arcy interview:
"Before we record songs, we always like to play all the songs a lot live,
to see how they work," D'Arcy says. "When we recorded 'Siamese Dream,' we
used a Mellotron, string instruments, multiple, multiple guitar parts...
But we always know we can go back and play it live with whatever we have
and it's still a good, solid song." (The WA Post, 11/19/93)

in no order of course
Wilco-Smashing Pumpkins-Black Keys-Stone Roses-Blur-Underworld-Sonic Youth
The Cure-Chemical Brothers-Animal Collective

1970petrus... are you are trying to make it impossible for yourself to get tickets? you have the link, good for you.

you need to delete this post, brah.

this board has a policy of not posting pre sale links in public.

also... just as a note. they change the link the day of the onsale, just to confuse you n00bs. good luck.

Don't forget, Pearl Jam is a lock to headline Lolla. 1970petrus knows.

I wouldn't dismiss them, despite grandcru's bullshit. There's some reason to think they might be there.

Black Sabbath * Kanye West * The Killers
The Black Keys * Wilco * Blur
Jack White * Florence + the Machine * The Shins
Passion Pit * At the Drive-In * Sigur Ros

The Shins -> The Killers vs Wilco <- Florence
At the Drive In-> Black Sabbath vs The Black Keys <- Jack White
Passion Pit -> Kanye West vs Blur <- Sigur Ros

Guy who plays often vs. guys who never play.

Real tear-jerking decision.

Kanye has played like 5 solo shows over the last two years.

Well Kanye doesn't play solo often so...
Anyway I would probably see Blur

Wilco Sabbath and Blur would be my decisions, although the Blur vs Kanye one would be awful.

I would probably see the same three as you.
Johnd should swap The Shins and Florence. Florence makes much more sense a sub for The Killers.

Just gonna throw this out there....

I get that it's #rare and lots of people would be excited....but I feel like Blur would have one of the smallest crowds a Lolla headliner has ever had.

Krentistthedentist

Agreed. Depending on who they were squared up against, they could probably draw a bigger crowd than both Wilco and MMJ, though.

I don't see them drawing a bigger crowd than Wilco or MMJ against any realistic south field headliner.

I think Blur would even have a tiny crowd against a #notrare headliner like The Black Keys.

The other headliner would have to be both
1) uncool
2) ubiquitous

But you know it wouldn't be. They would play NYC at least and probably LA and SF

True, but even against the keys? they're everywhere all the fucking time.
Actually the more i think about it you're probably right.

Yeah I'm sort of conflicted. I feel like the claim "Blur would have a smaller crowd then MMJ" is crazy, but it makes sense if you consider that literally no American knows about Blur. (Terrible) case in point- they play MMJ but not Blur on, say, XRT. And any "fans would travel!" argument is bunk because I can't imagine hundreds of people flying for a single American Blur show.

All that being said, I'd still go.

It'd be the closest show us Canadians would get to see, as well as many other western hemisphere countries. I'll be coming either way, but I could guarantee 5 people I know that would drop everything just to see Blur this year while not having to travel to Europe.
