Black Sabbath * Jay-Z * The Black Keys
Beck * Bjork * Swedish House Mafia

i think was one that he and i agreed on last night.
although given the Reading idea, maybe switch Bjork out for the Cure and put em at a 4 over Beck?
i think TBK gets billed over cure at this point =/

I think a Jay-Z solo set is just as likely as WTT, especially when you consider the fact that Lolla is the only US major he hasn't played yet.

Even if Jay-Z gets billed as a solo act I can totally see Kanye coming on stage with him as a guest and doing at least 4 songs together. And then Kanye will take the mic from Jay-Z, kick him off stage, and do his own set.

Actually not sure but assuming it's the same portion of Downsview as Radiohead is doing and that show is 40,000 capacity. If Foster The People gets a 40,000 person field to play with... I will lose faith in humanity. They have done Edgefest there in recent years and I can see them doing the same for both Radiohead and FtP, but essentially the stage and a big general admission field.

I've heard there's a new venue being set up at the park this summer but that's the extent of it. Google time for me...

Your sources telling you different?

No:
1. Multiple, in-radius arena shows that aren't sold out - Chicago, Milwaukee, Indy, Grand Rapids
2. Not a WME act
3. Too duplicative of Jack White, who I consider effectively confirmed (and both are 3-4 acts, which in the past go head to head), and Pearl Jam, who I regard as a serious possibility
4. They played in 2010
5. 8/4, yes, but, obviously given that they're already in Canada, Osheaga (which they also played in 2010, but where they were billed lower than at Lolla)
6. I see no reason they can't come back in 2013 or 14 and stake a solid claim to the top line (at Outside Lands too in the latter year).

Edit: I mean, obviously it can happen. But my bet is against.

Driftwood
03-12-2012, 09:05 AM
Why the hell is Jack White effectively confirmed? Because he is playing one other festival?

There is definitely more evidence for TBK. Playing in 2010 makes no difference - have you seen how many times they've played Lolla?

Yes, they are a WME act. Raconteurs played Lolla in 06 and 08. 10 would have been too soon to return, and their absence is even more reason for his presence this year.

I think Black Keys are slightly more likely than Jack White to play Lolla this year. I also think it's giving C3 too much credit to say they won't book both because they're so alike. Both are major money-makers. As long as they're on different nights, they will good decisions.

I don't personally know the guy who confirmed the Black Keys, but I'd like to know I have a good sense of when someone is telling the truth and when someone is trolling.

Please name another major act ("different project" come on) that has played Chicagopalooza three times in five years. TBK did so (four times if you count Auerbach solo), but were never an end of day act. In fact, they led into the Raconteurs in '08 - Jack White is the more senior act and arguably should headline first. I admit there's clearly a relationship with TBK there.

I think everyone would like to think that. I personally have seen too many stories on the internet to credit anyone I don't know or can't independently verify in some fashion. And I'm skeptical of the circumstances of the story, which opportunistically followed TBK's announcement of the 8/4 date.

I feel I would be more inclined to travel for Lolla if I knew Jack was on the bill and if he wasn't necessarily touring. I could basically throw a dart at a map and I'm sure the Black Keys will be there on any given day.

Having said that, unfortunately, I actually can't decide who is the bigger headliner at this stage. Jack has #rare cred but the Black Keys sell out arenas.

The shows are literally one third to one half White Stripes songs. That's more than a sprinkling.

It's like if the White Stripes had more instruments and a good drummer. I agree that the draw isn't equal, but he's much much more of a draw than if there was only a sprinkling on White Stripes rarities.

Guess I have to give up on Pearl Jam, and relent a bit on TBK. But if they're playing, I think Jack White may be a 5.

Friday - SHM (4) vs. TBK (3)
Saturday - WTT (1 or 2) vs. JW (5)
Sunday - Metallica (1 or 2) vs. Sigur Ros (6)

Great lineup but I think replace sigur ros with Beck but he wouldn't be a 6 SHM would be

jack white is not the white stripes. and even as much as you want to pretend that these solo shows with a few songs sprinkled in is the second coming, it is not. the black keys are bigger.

Even if it were the Stripes, the Black Keys are bigger. Only time this wouldn't be true would maybe be the first couple comeback shows, and that's only if it were marketed correctly.

No, it seems like a collection of the standard shot-in-the-dark guesses we see year in and year out. People have been guessing SP since Lolla set up shop in Chicago and I don't see why this year is any different.

People gravitate towards guessing previous Lolla headliners rather than admitting that more recent acts like Black Keys, Florence and the Machine and Bon Iver are now big enough to headline. Don't get fooled into thinking C3 is interested too much in nostalgie like many of the older fans are.

I think I remember someone in here saying that Lollapalooza likes to book the highest selling artist of the year (ex: Lady GaGa in '10, Kanye in '08). This last year's highest selling artist was just announced today as Taylor Swift. She is playing overseas until August, where she has one show announced on August 11 in Canada.

I hope she won't play here, because I can't stand her music, but just thought it was worth pointing out, haha.

According to the report, Swift brought in more cash last year than fellow singers Adele, Britney Spears and Katy Perry combined.

What that guy was referring to was a discussion about Lolla booking the top selling artists in terms of records. It's pretty well known that Adele was the best selling artist last year in that regard.

btw U2 did have the highest grossing tour of 2011

If Deadmau5 can be billed at #6under MMJ, I don't see why SHM would need to be billed any higher than #6. Either way, I think the discussion is pointless. There will be three South stage headliners and probably 3 North stage headliners. I think most people are expecting an EDM act as a North stage headliner. Daft Punk is probably the only electronic act that's big enough to headline the South stage at Lolla right now.

Lolla headliner rules:

Nobody older than Perry
No blacks besides Kanye
No women with no prior history with the festival

I starting Wikipedia-ing to check this one, and was shocked to learn that Dave Gahan is three years younger than Perry.

edit: Robert Smith is younger than Perry by about three weeks :D

(The Shins) The Black Keys vs SHM (Miike Snow)
(Florence) Adele vs Sigur Ros (Garbage)
(Silversun Pickups) RHCP vs Passion Pit (Gotye)

Ugh.

...but this would be pretty terrible.

I feel like that's the worst it could be (and it still has Sigur Ros and Garbage). Please let that be the worst.

Any scenario in which I end up at RHCP is, in fact, fucking terrible.

I have M83 and Santigold in 7:30 slots. Which day(s) can Justice play / are they likely to play?

I don't see them clashing with Passion Pit. Anyway Passion Pit won't be a headliner.

I have an awful feeling that Adele / Taylor Swift, RHCP, Black Keys and SHM are going to be four of the headliners.

What is wrong with those last three?

the problem with rhcp is that john frusciante is not playing guitar for the band these days. the problem with the black keys is that they've played chicago lollapalooza at least 3 times, and auerbach played solo one year. the problem with shm is that they aren't the chemical brothers, kraftwerk, the prodigy, orbital, or daft punk.

All of this, except I would also add that SHM are awful.

Yeah, they are pretty meh.

I think that the board paints a lot of bands as being unbelievably awful when they are in fact "just meh".

I will admit that I didn't know who they were until the Coachella lineup came out.

Wish I could go back to those days.

Welcome to the internet.

It'd be pretty boring around here if all we did was "well, they were ok, but these guys were slightly better" all day.
