Metallica has done tons of stage setups just like the southside stage. Their summer sanitarium stages and the hard rock festival all had flat stages, and they still did their standard fire/fireworks show during the start of one. I do not see that being a logistical problem. If they were to do a club show I would be surprised if it wasn't exclusive to their metclub members.

The article in the Mexican magazine or newspaper had the dates as Aug 3-4 I believe.

From what I can tell, that newspaper said they were playing Mexico City on the 4th, as well as a few other Mexican dates. Me thinks the Mexican dates got moved up a few dates with Lolla in mind for the weekend. That, or the paper didn't have their facts straight.

What? Are we ignoring the 10 or so festivals they are playing in Europe this summer (and have for the past few years) in addition to the Orion festival in NJ?

I did a horrible job of making my point, but I was referring just to North America. Maybe they just do Orion/Mexico/some other goofy shit rather than hit up Lolla, where I'm assuming they'll get way less money than one of their own huge shows.

Metallica is going to add shows in Guadalajara and Monterrey - http://www.sopitas.com/site/149288-rumor-metallica-regresa-a-mexico-en-agosto/

The question for Lolla is whether those dates are the weekend before or after Mexico City (on a Wednesday and Thursday). I think after makes more sense, especially in light of the earlier article referencing August 4. They could then continue up the coast towards a certain festival in their hometown Bay Area the following weekend.

I'm going to reiterate what I said earlier. It's possible the Mexican outlet reported on the dates before they were finalized and Metallica moved the dates up a few days in order to leave the weekend open for Lolla.

Yeah, it's also possible they're playing other shows in Mexico that weekend, but I don't think we should count them out yet.

Even though they have been known to change their story later down the line the press release makes a big deal of the unveiling their new stage in Mexico City. So if they add additional dates they would have to be after the Mexico City dates. Bottom line is that if there is any truth to the rumor of them adding additional dates in Mexico, they aren't playing Lolla.

OSHEAGA 2012: Florence and the Machine, The Shins, Amadou & Mariam, Justice, M83 . Rest of the line up will be announced on Tuesday at 10pm.

Montreal>Toronto>Chicago or vice versa doesn't seem that difficult to pull off in a weekend and the acts without Toronto dates could have a travel day in between Lolla and Osheaga.

Montreal>Toronto>Chicago or vice versa doesn't seem that difficult to pull off in a weekend and the acts without Toronto dates could have a travel day in between Lolla and Osheaga.

That would mean that Saturday Osheaga acts aren't likely at all for Lolla, so in two weeks we'll know a list of acts that aren't playing Lolla.

MookieDaddy

If Against Me! could play a show in LA the night before their Lolla show in 2010, bands can do the Montreal/Toronto/Chi thing pretty easily.

Montreal>Toronto>Chicago or vice versa doesn't seem that difficult to pull off in a weekend and the acts without Toronto dates could have a travel day in between Lolla and Osheaga.

I know all of the scenarios are possible, but I'll put it this way: What's more likely? A band plays any day of Osheaga one weekend and any day of Lollapalooza the next weekend, with a handful of shows in Toronto, Detroit, MN, etc. OR a band plays Friday/Saturday of one fest and Saturday/Sunday of the other fest in the same weekend?

You can really make a case for either. The first scenario is good for acts that aren't in the midst of a tour, but are only playing festivals, while the other is ideal for a touring act.

carligula
03-16-2012, 09:19 AM

Afrojack big enough to headline? I wouldn't have thought that deadmau5 was, but he did last year. And I understand that Afrojack was at Perry's last year, but deadmau5 was at Perry's in 2009.

Also, we've eliminated (as headliners): Tiesto, SHM, Justice, David Guetta, Harris.

i won't be the one to use your username to any advantage here,

but as for the comparison, MMJ was a #5 and Radiohead would be a #1.
having a top tier headliner break the radius clause is a far bigger economic (and probably legal) issue.

Radiohead was never a legitimate option. Even less so now that there is the tour date.

I think the new guy might want you to elaborate on why they can't come back to Lolla this year.

HA!

but seriously,

-radius clause with dates even outside of IL
-repeat #1 headliner
-playing coachella and bonnaroo, nobody headlines all 3 US majors
-chicago date

stelles75

Repeating as a #1 is a non issue imo. Very few people would mind and just because it hasn't occurred yet isn't a good enough reason.

Thisismyname
03-16-2012, 04:26 PM
But yes. He's new, so I'll explain further. (I really should keep this reasoning saved so I can copy & paste it when necessary).

Radiohead has stated before they do not play festivals on back to back albums. In the last decade or more, I have not seen a festival where this was proven untrue. So since they played Lolla on the In Rainbows tour, they will not on the King of Limbs tour.

+all that other stuff wretched said.

stelles75
03-16-2012, 04:27 PM
Ah... they actually stated that as like a rule? Huh... interesting.

So they should play Lolla in support of their next album, I guess?

Proof that Stelles rarely reads my posts, considering I've pointed out that fact like 10 times since last Lolla and all the Radiohead talk started. ;)

Yeppers. I mean at least then it would be "possible".

Or maybe if they do a weird leg next year that isn't "King of Limbs" technically. See: Bonnaroo 2006 performance.

Feel free to call me stupid, but why is Radiohead not being talked about?

Based on the 6/17/11 My Morning Jacket thing, shouldn't Radiohead still be eligible?

It seems about as plausible as anything else being discussed (Except TBK and the bleep bloop headliner).

At least you know.

So they should play Lolla in support of their next album, I guess?

If they do summer festivals next year, I think it is possible they headline next year
Also, Radiohead seems to be more or less moving away from the album format all together, so that rule seems a bit hazy for the future

edit: however they may end up not touring at all next year who knows, but if I had to guess I would say they do South America next year and some random fests in the summer

I know I'm like 3 pages behind, but if SHM isn't playing, doesn't that discredit Sigur Ros playing? Kind of a double-edged sword.

I understand that I've upset you somehow, but I've been saying this for weeks, before the June leg was announced, and learned it 3-4 months ago from someone who also advised that they would be playing Coachella and Bonnaroo. FYI.

Jay-Z * Red Hot Chili Peppers * System of a Down
The Black Keys * Beck * Bjork

Shins -> TBK v SoaD <- AtDI
Common -> Jay-Z v Bjork <- Sigur Ros
Florence + the Machine -> RHCP v Beck <- Passion Pit

edit: would have SoaD billed over TBK because rare, but still have TBK playing the South. a la muse/coldplay last year.
