View Full Version : It Starts Now: Volume Four - 2012 Lollapalooza Headliner Speculation
Driftwood

Maybe this should move to the non-headliner thread but I challenge anyone to fit all the big bands coming over from Osheaga, the rest of the headliners (because at most 1-2 from the Osheaga crossover going to headline - Black Keys and Justice / Florence), some hip-hop, at least 3 EDM acts and all the usual generic mainstream gone indie that C3 is known to load up their line-up on and a couple of ugh Q101 choices in 27 marquee spots (3 on South main, 1 on South side, 3 on North main - DJs at Petrillo closing, Grove closer and "new Perry's" closer).
My list from the below schedule: Metallica, RHCP, Black Keys, Jack White, Avicii, Florence & The Machine, Justice, Marilyn Manson, Passion Pit, The Shins, Silversun Pickups, Gotye, Kaskade, M83, Big Boi, La Roux, Garbage, Miike Snow, Airborne Toxic Event, Odd Future, The Gaslight Anthem, The Head & The Heart, The Temper Trap, The Darkness, Metric, Santigold, The Hives.
The Head & The Heart -> Shins (La Roux) Black Keys vs Metric -> M83 (DJ) Avicii vs Odd Future vs Garbage
Santigold -> Gotye (Big Boi) RHCP vs Airborne Toxic Event -> Silversun Pickpus (DJ) Jack White vs Kaskade vs Miike Snow
The Hives -> Marilyn Mason (The Darkness) Metallica vs The Temper Trap -> Passion Pit (DJ) Florence & The Machine vs Justice vs The Gaslight Anthem
Are of those too small for the top 27? Maybe I am aiming too low.

The Head and The Heart sold out their VIc show well in advance. Same with ABT's most recent show.
As for The Hives, maybe they'll get a bit of a reunion bump?

Airborne played the Riv. Head & The Heart have two sold out Vic shows I believe.

It's not always about venue size when it comes to bands in those slots. Last year we had BAD, The Cars in those slots so I think there will be at least a few "bigger" names playing at 4:00 this year.
Driftwood
03-22-2012, 10:53 AM
It almost meant acts like Nas & Damian Marley who played HoB getting a sub spot. If you want I can interchange a 4:30 and 6:30 act like The Cars last year (who were billed high for their slot). Heck I think Arctic Monkeys were a small sub last year (they also weren't billed top 12). Every act I have can move Aragon tickets in the sub spots.

You see how this game goes though? That means they could also sub because of Nas & Damian Marley only playing HoB. You've got to look at it on the average not just one band in one slot. Flogging Molly played Aragon and got 4:30 billing too. The Cars played the Riv but were billed in the top 10. It tends to average out.

Airborne Toxic Event also already had a 2:30 main stage slot at their last trip to Lolla which is comparable to 5:30 side stage.

How likely do we think TV on the Radio is now that they are playing a show in NYC a week before Lolla?
I don't think it's a very high percentage, but with us needing more Saturday acts because of Osheaga, I think it's very possible. Also, Pitchfork was their only Chicago show behind the new album.
To CG, I was out of the country during Pitchfork. I had a ticket for Sunday but had to sell it.

So going back to Osheaga - 6-7 European acts, plus Avicii, Shins, Passion Pit and Black Keys, plus 4-5 other headliners, plus another big electronic act, 2 hip-hop acts, 2 ugh acts ... I guess that puts at as 19-21. That leaves 6-8 slots for the generic indie stuff (though maybe more EDM will invade the top 27). It's possible I must admit. Fingers crossed.

Nothing has happened since Symb talked about the MSG date except they've announced more festival dates? Someone said that Pinkpop, Reading and Leeds, and that other festival I forget, often share one headliner with Lolla and The Cure are playing all three. Plus this is the logical next American festival they would play seeing as they've already played Coachella.
EDIT: I just dont see WTT happening even though that would be sick, and I feel like with the headliners I picked Jack White would just be overkill.

I'm of the popular opinion that if they play, it should really be after 8pm. For that to happen, they're going to have to arrange the schedule to accommodate them. I don't see them filling the traditional role of a mainstage headliner and they're too big to headline the Grove stage in the 2011 incarnation. All signs seem to point to opening up Perry's stage to other types of music and allowing acts that fall inbetween the range of Beirut/Ratatat/CWK and MMJ/Deadmau5.
This is the real challenge of booking a festival that ends at 10pm.

You know, you took a lot of crap for your views on Sigur Ros, but I think you make a good point. I dig them and all, but they wouldn't be my ideal way to end Lolla. They were a nice break between Metallica and Ghostland Observatory at Roo, but there just really isn't a good place for them at Lolla.

Yeah, there was this convo weeks ago (i'm not complaining) but I want to mention that I think the U.S. fan base for Sigur Ros is a lot bigger than some assume.
Jonsi the lead singer put out an solo album, which is good but not amazing, and sold out most of the U.S. dates he did playing decent size venues. Have to think a chunk of that was rubbed off from his Sigur Ros ties.

If we get either The Throne OR The Cure I'll be happy.
If we get Jack White and the Black Keys both I'll be happy.
I think my chances of being happy are good.
I'm happy.

You'll get one or the other for JW or TBK, I still think they are too similar to both be headlining

1. Wut?
2. Similar never stopped C3. Coldplay and Muse say hello....

I'm thinking Sigur Ros can headline Lolla. People say they don't have a big fan base in the US, but then where does their size come from? Definitely not Iceland (pop 320k). They're much bigger than MMJ too.
What? No.

I agree in a sense, and see why you would say that but that reality is one of the major reasons Lolla is my least favorite of the Big 3.
I feel you on this.

I come here everyday hoping for some kind of actual news..... Nothing. Like someone above said, Watch the Throne or The Cure are my top two. I was hoping drizzy Drake could make an appearance but that looks like a no go. :( TBK, just saw them in Grand Rapids. Arctic Monkeys as the support act, waaaaaay better. It's almost insulting really.
Don't get me wrong, The Black Keys are great, but not for a headliner.

With the elim of Metallica, I'm trying to think of new no 1s... aside from WTT or Sabbath any new ideas at this point? Could The Cure be no. 1 if they were there?

They're pretty similar, but it's not improbable. If C3 can't get anyone else big enough to fill the 5/6 slot, White is very reasonable.

TBK killed it in Chicago, the Artic Monkeys were nowhere near as good as their lolla set which was shorter.

Yeah, I thought so too (despite JW being a much greater artist with a more serious attachment to the blues), and I've come up with a half dozen other reasons TBK won't headline, but I've given up and given in. Basically, TBK are playing Lolla, Coachella, will return (again) to Outside Lands, get added to Roo, will play Worthy Farm in late June for everyone who didn't hear Glastonbury isn't happening this year, and are my playing at my house.

C3 isn't going to book as the overall #1 headliner a band that played an arena show less than four months before Lolla.

i was kidding. i am not arguing that TBK are a #1.
but there is a legitimate question at this point as to who the fuck would be.
WTT? Sabbath?? JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE?!

I would put Beyonce in the mix since she is playing shows this summer.

i really am thinking Sabbath, Metallica (if they can make a flight back to Chicago Saturday and to Mexico Sunday), or something older for our #1.
i think we're assuming a lot of pop #1's because we have so little to go on and because of E last year.

I mean even if they book The Cure would they be a #1 with RHCP and TBK on the bill?

no.

I can see them making the Cure number 1 ahead of RHCP and the Keys. It's not like Depeche Mode was a true number 1 in 09.

How about David Bowie as the #1?
I know he's not touring anymore w/ his previous heart issues, but he still does one-off shows here and there. I'd say he's as likely as some of the other names being tossed around.
