i agree. (broc)
and much to my own chagrin,
i don't think Soundgarden was a true #1 in 2010 in comparison to the venues/sales of Green Day or Lady Gaga.

Good points guys. Plus The Cure would have the #rare factor going for them.

I hope you're agreeing with me and helloninja that Bowie is totally possible.

So who was the true #1 headliner in 2009?
The Killers had a bigger crowd than DM, but I wasn't at Tool so I have no idea about the size of their crowd.

was in the front for Tool so i can't say,
but ktd said the crowd was pretty massive.
Killers and Tool were definitely the biggest venue playing/sell out bands that year, fiscally.
i think having Tool as a #1 would've fallen in line with Pearl Jam, Radiohead, and Soundgarden.
but the DM thing was certainly a rarity.
Broc1123
03-23-2012, 10:10 AM
I don't think a top 6 of The Cure, RHCP, Keys, JW, Avicii, and Florence is heavy enough compared to past lineups.
Has Pearl Jam been ruled out as a headliner/#1? Eddie vedder's last euro solo show is the 3rd of August. PJ could easily close out the fest on the 5th.
WretchedSkye2113
03-23-2012, 10:12 AM
also not expensive enough, when you consider what they've put into headliners for the past 4 years. (irt broc again, jfc i can't time it right today)
Driftwood
03-23-2012, 10:12 AM
How about David Bowie as the #1?
I know he's not touring anymore w/ his previous heart issues, but he still does one-off shows here and there. I'd say he's as likely as some of the other names being tossed around.
When was his last one-off show?
How is he "as likely"?

03-23-2012, 10:22 AM
I've tried to suggest in the past that the leftmost act on the top line of the poster is not necessarily the "#1." That in fact there may not be a #1 or any other #. But this is a lost cause.
SecondSet
03-23-2012, 10:24 AM
These are the possible #1s imo - WTT, Pearl Jam, RHCP (maybe), Cure, and Snoop Dogg... with Dr. Dre
Driftwood
03-23-2012, 10:24 AM
And we've suggested you are dead wrong because C3 and has used the left most act at it's fests to be the unopposed headliner every year they've had an unopposed headliner at both fests except this past year at ACL when Arcade Fire had more universal appeal I guess than Stevie Wonder for an indie music festival.
Edit: And yes I know they had The Eagles unopposed but they still move a shit ton of tickets. Does anyone know what Stevie's draw is for an individual show at this point?
Driftwood
03-23-2012, 10:25 AM
I'm kinda leaning to Snoop & Dre as our #1. Maybe they replaced Sabbath so quickly with them because they knew C3 had already booked them?

Dr Dre is only doing Coachella because it's on his home turf. He won't do any shows outside California until Detox is out.

Awww yeah. Looks like Tuesday night will be a long one. Last time I was looking at the lineup, I was drenched in rain and coming home from Arcade Fire. So hopefully this time will be better.
As for the actual topic at hand: I swear I heard somewhere about the whole Snoop/Dre thing being a one-off too. But then again, didn't Snoop at Lolla draw a pretty decent sized crowd last time, even as a non-header? I wasn't there, but I hear things.
WretchedSkye2113
03-23-2012, 11:03 AM
it was an alright crowd from what i saw (i was waiting for SSPU on the Adidas, so i could see everything from the back) but it wasn't ridiculous huge for that slot.

My girlfriend brought up a good point that if Perry's is gone, it'll reduce the amount of camping at a stage and therefore make it easier to get a decent spot for a show that you're running to with only 10 or 15 mins to spare....the EDM people will literally just follow it around the park wherever it goes, so fields will clear out a lot more between acts.

Right, but the Coldplay fans that literally sat against the rail on blankets throughout the entire day's worth of music would by NO MEANS do it for an EDM act. You might get campers that would sit through that shit at a Throne stage, or even a TBK stage potentially, but I honestly think it'd greatly reduce the amount of people who just stand around all day waiting for a show.
Not that there's anything wrong with it if you're going to get into the music. It just makes it easier for hoppers.

The point wasn't that they waited all day to see Coldplay. I did the same thing and had rail spots for pretty much every show. It was the fact that YTG, Grace Potter, and The Kills put on fucking rock n' roll shows right in that crowds' faces, and those Coldplay campers were all sitting down not paying attention, denying actual fans of that music the best spot for the show. Then they complained when the crowd up front got a little rough for The Kills because everyone was dancing and bumping into them.

i don't see why anyone would need to camp at a single stage all day to get a decent spot. For the headliners I really wanted to see, I would make my move as the crowd clears out after the 4:00 acts (so White Lies and The Cars) and have no problem getting great spots for both APC/Muse and Arctics/Foos.
I agree with this. In '10 I got to the South Stage as X Japan ended. I was about to be right on the fence for all of Wolfmother and Soundgarden. And I didnt need to push or be rude, it was an easy walk

Also I think we're way over-hoping on this Throne thing. There is 100% zero indication that they'd be around whatsoever, they're just a huge wishlist item at this point. It does seem Lollaesque to do, but Jay-Z doing a set at SXSW and the possibility of Kanye even joining him for a NiP/Otis encore set make it a slightly more satisfying prediction even if its not THAT much more realistic.

Does C3 work deals with artists where they pay a flat rate and get them for like, 3 fests, ever? Obviously it's not like they would own the band for every fest date they had and then just plop them wherever, but that'd be the only thing that could make a band more likely just because they're at another C3 fest.
Just because they like them for one fest means nothing in relation to another fest. C3 is dumb but they aren't dumb enough to book the same fest in however many different locations.

If they've booked Sabbath, they've already booked Sabbath. They won't announce it until the last possible minute because if Sabbath has to cancel, they do not want to announce that someone that huge isn't playing their festival anymore.
This isn't like "Oh, Sabbath might not get booked 'cause of all the drama!" If Sabbath tells C3 they have to drop out before April 9th, the lineup gets released differently and you're none the wiser. The drama about the reunion is actually conversely being caused because of no announcement, which as stated, could be because they're already booked and C3 wants the breathing space. Also probably contracted that they're not allowed to announce it, which coincides with what Sharon said in the article- have to announce it together.

Unless Coachella gave ATDI headliner type money, I doubt they would agree to ONLY play Coachella during the american festival season. Seems like they would lose out on a lot of money.
And really, what does Coachella care if they play more shows after theirs. As long as they get the first of the reunion.

Otherwise, it's kind of hard to say. He did just bring the Danzig Legacy show to Chicago in the fall, and it runs longer than Lolla's typical set times, so I wouldn't expect him to be there. I think Cure is just as likely as any other speculative headliner at this point, they have a big enough gap July 20 to Aug 18, and they seem to be doing almost all festivals this summer. Frankly, I could see them doing Lolla and Outside Lands pretty easily

I take it back. Just last year, they played those 3 shows in LA and then NYC. They have no problem coming over here for a short stint. I was under the impression that they only come over for extensive tours every few years or so.

Worst case scenario
SOAD * Beyonce * RHCP
The Black Keys * Avicii * Florence
Best Case:
WTT * Black Sabbath * The Cure
Beck * Blur * Justice
Realistic Compromise:
Watch the Throne * Black Sabbath * Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Black Keys * Beck * Florence + The Machine

I guess you could put florence as a sub and make avicii a headliner instead

Let me clarify: the "compromise" that johnd put up has no EDM headliner, which at this point is pretty much a 100% lock. I meant that he overlooked that, not that I prefer it.

Well I think we are getting these four. Draw your own conclusion.

I don't think Lolla will have RHCP, because a) they wouldn't want to have 2 of their top 4 acts playing arena shows so close to the fest, and b)they would probably have to downgrade them from the top billed spot, which could cause some issues.
Driftwood
03-24-2012, 06:34 PM
Why would that cause issues? They are playing second fiddle at Roo. The fest (Lolla) has also gotten bigger since 2006.

Well they've never played Bonnaroo before, so there's no comparison to make. While Lolla has gotten bigger, losing the top spot might imply that RHCP have stayed the same or dropped in popularity.

I'd argue that they have dropped a bit, but regardless I think it's a potential issue about bringing them back.

Ween came back to sub. It's a paycheck. Wouldn't surprise me if Lolla paid them as much / even more for their 2 spot now than their 1 spot then.

I agree. I think bands obviously care more about the paycheck than billing order. Look at Coldplay they were a #1 at ACL in 05 and they came back as a #4 last year and I bet that they got a bigger paycheck last year.

So basically the only reason we think that RHCP are going to be there is because a fairly new boarder said that he knew someone who knows someone in the band who said they were playing?

Eh if they don't come off arrogant / pompous / all knowing - more often than not it seems to pan out.
The tour schedule also has then coming back to America then.

Yeah I didn't mean to imply that he was coming off as arrogant. I just don't see two of the top three headliners being acts that played shows in Chicago less than five months before Lolla.

Maybe TBK wouldn't be top three, though.

I can't see Justice playing and not headlining after watching some of their Ultra set or at least just playing at night. But they might be too big to close a Perrys stage

Good point. I just thought that then saw your post.
With how small our 5-6 bands look to be, I can see us having another large top 4.
Black Sabbath . Red Hot Chili Peppers . Jay-Z
The Black Keys . Jack White . Avicii
