I'm afraid that Phish playing Alpine would not count them out for the festival - they're the kind of band that inherently draws repeat play from its audience, who will see several shows in several days. It's not unusual for them to play Alpine twice and then come back a few weeks later and play Chicago proper (or vice versa).

Whether they're the kind of ACL act that crosses over is probably another story. I'm somewhat skeptical, but I certainly wouldn't rule it out either. They're no dinosaur act, and you could call them "alternative" after a fashion.

That said, I'm pretty sure they won't be there this year.

The Avett Brothers certainly could be a #5 or 6, or they could sub. They're another questionable Lolla act, potentially, given their folkie (bluegrass, even) orientation, of course. But I think that question too is moot - not only is KC->TX the wrong direction, but they were on that list of availabilities that we got earlier on.

I know Avetts fit the demographic better, but they're #6 at Bonnaroo this year. Typically, that lineup is somewhat topheavy (see Strokes position last year and Phoenix's position in 2010), so it's reasonable to expect a #6 there to be a #6 or even #5 at Lolla. They actually played the hockey arena here the last time through, which is more than I can say for Phoenix.

You are going to take that once piece of evidence and exclude everything else? They sold out Aragon months before their show last year with secondary market tickets going for over $100. They are #6 at Roo (who usually has Lolla beat in those 5-10 spots or so). They've done a ton of amphitheatre shows. Of course it depends who the other headliners are but in they are int he mix for 5-8.

My guess is they are about as big as Black Keys when they played Summerfest last year and if they could have packaged the show with other indie going on mainstream acts (Florence and Cage for Black Keys last year) Avetts could have played Marcus too.
