View Full Version : It Starts Now: Volume Four - 2012 Lollapalooza Headliner Speculation
MadBird11
08-16-2011, 12:12 AM
lolla's had pretty much every major headliner you can get, except Jay Z, Phish, Prince, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, U2, who else did i miss?
Bruce Springsteen
Gorillaz
Neil Young/Buffalo Springfield
Massive Attack
Portishead
The Cure
R.E.M.
Oasis when that was still a thing
And that's just off the top of my head. So, really, there's a lot that they've missed.

Metallica – Kanye West – Blink-182
Björk – Vampire Weekend – Tiësto
Metallica vs. Tiësto
Kanye West vs. Björk
Blink-182 vs. Vampire Weekend

Kanye is probably the headliner I'd most like to see, but I dunno.
I feel like Kanye failed to strike when the iron was hot on a MBDTF tour.

Kanye is such a hometown favorite. Also, I think I read somewhere that they tried to book him for this year but he wanted the Sunday night time slot. No link to provide though. They might pursue that option again. They did the same with Coldplay when they tried to book them for two years (via an off camera portion of an interview of a Lolla rep done by a friend's dad who works for WGN)

Yeah Kanye not having a solo Chicago show is weird. I imagine that C3 got Kanye for ACL and Lolla next year.

I saw her in 2008 at Bonnaroo. Hulksmash said that we should see her on the small stage while we could. This is the same guy who said Lady Gaga would be headlining after her Lolla set in 2007. Granted, it was a joke, but...

Look at your list of subs and tell me the last time Lolla has had six strong subs (probably 2007 but you have to gauge how big those bands were in 2007).

I think the rule that there always has to be an alt or indie band on a day is one that Lolla follows pretty closely.

Yeah. I guess it would depend on what they play. I saw them last May at the Riviera which was quite good. They didn't play as many "Epic" songs I guess as I would have liked. They played Anesthetize but left out the last 4-5 minutes of it. If they would play some more of the older stuff too and some stuff like Arriving Somewhere and had a cool setup, I bet it might be close to epic. They would have to give them at least 60 minutes on stage.
I wonder how many people would attend the show? I have a feeling many people would buy tickets on that day just for them.

Ahhh I knew this would happen. Honestly I originally planned to write good bands, but decided to be more topical and go with bands people are predicting. A Weird Al DJ set is just funny to me. I can assure you I don't intend to call Lil Wayne, Benny Bennasi, Tiesto and Weird Al "good bands."

anyway, i think we should have the cure headline all 3 nights, 2-hour sets the first two nights and an epic 4 hr set on sunday, where they run way past curfew & the set goes down as the best in lolla history & in fact the noise causes all those rich yuppies near the park to pour out into the streets or hang out their windows & listen & weep in joy, leading to the city finally agreeing to extend lolla's curfew to midnight in the hopes that the magic of that night might be repeated in the future.
you guys can pick who you want to headline opposite them.

Will Greg giving it to Opti while he blows Robert Smith be the grand finale?

I could see that since that was the first year of their reunion
Since they tour so much now I think the draw factor of their festival sets in 2010 and 2011 has greatly diminished
This is incorrect, Phish is essentially immune to oversaturation. They just had a 30k+ festival of their own for poop's sake, they can headline any festival for as long as they stay together.

Not saying that they aren't still a headline level band I am just saying they are gonna draw smaller crowds at non jam band fests. From what I heard The Shins had a bigger crowd than Phish at OSL
