Well typically an arena hosts somewhere from 10-20 thousand people.
In the latest m83 tour, he played venues ranging from 500-1200.
Typically to headline a festival such as Lollapalooza, you have to be able to draw at least 25000 people in addition to the people looking from the back of the crowd.
Obviously this is something m83 cannot do, as he is only playing venues ranging from 500-1200 people.
Even as a remedial math person, I don't see how this is so difficult.
I am sure that someone who actually knows the venues played and/or cares about m83 more than I do will elaborate more.
Also, if I were your boss, I'd fire your ass for being on a message board during this so called "business meeting".

I wish they were playing so we could laugh at how low they were on the line-up. Not sure now with those extra dates. When are they playing Osheaga or did they have a Toronto date?
I guess we can point to the Coachella line-up and where they are billed there but Madonna didn't headline either. Maybe M83 didn't want to.

M83 isn't even a sub.... much less a headliner.
if they were playing, which they are not, they'd play from 3pm - 6pm sometime... most likely not on the main stage.

They did sell out the Riv.

i'm cool with A6 102 and † headlining because i'm guessing they're not terribly expensive. and a few people have mentioned that TBK aren't high rollers either.
So we either get a massive top 3, or a mediocre top 3 (far more likely) but an incredible mid and lower tier.

Ok, fine. You're right. 3rd line on their day at Coachella. 3rd from the top (8pm) on their day at Ultra.
That should tell us everything we need to know.

One: I am the Boss
Two: I'm on an iPad now
Three: Why does M83 have to draw 25000 people to Lolla as a headliner when its a festival? There's going to be 25000 people there anyway. The biggest act doesn't even close the night at some festivals, especially when it comes to electronic music. Want examples?
Four: What are the soundscan numbers for each act? Since you wanted to get into a quantitative analysis.
Five: And probably the biggest thing, Avicii plays arenas because his sound is tailored for them. M83 doesn't need to because of the crossover appeal and they also do multiple dates in certain cities. Doesn't mean they couldn't do it.
BTW, i don't think either of them are headlining. Peas.

Pretty sure C3 takes potential to sell tickets into account when they throw a million or two out the window to a headliner.
Four: What are the soundscan numbers for each act? Since you wanted to get into a quantitative analysis.

correct. still not impossible though.
consequently,
does anyone know if that show has even sold out yet?

just a little tip for you new guys...
regulars on this board are very quick to get information about the fest.
we spend all year speculating and mulling over the numbers and probabilities.
we have detailed information, statistics, demographics about the fest, and collective experiences to back it up on most topics related to lollapalooza. most of us have been attending year after year, for a long time.
we don't know everything, all the time...
sometimes, n00bs shock us.
believe me, if you're getting ridiculed, it's not because we think you know something we don't.
but what I'm trying to tell you is that in most instances regarding this fest....we know more than you.
for one simple reason...
we do this all year.
not just for 2 weeks after goldies and the lineup.
perhaps some of you should try doing a little more listening, and a little less yapping about what you think you know.
you might just learn something.

All i said was i didn't understand why people thought Avicii was a bigger act than M83 and the insults flew. and got rude quick. Probably because i didn't buy their logic and people attack when they feel threatened. Its generally a matter of personal taste. Tiesto & AVB suck, but they sell out arenas and play the Olympics. So you can suck and still headline a festival, doesn't mean you'll be any good at it. Look at David Guetta.

no. no no no no no. there is no such thing as a "capsule hint." last year everyone flipped out and thought The Cure being on the capsule made them the headers for 2011. The capsule is nothing. Please tell me which music boards you moderate so I don't accidentally start posting on them because I don't want to be a part of a message board where the moderators cannot understand logic.
Also this was never a matter about quality. The board in general loves M83 so I'm not sure why you brought up all that stuff about Tiesto, AVB and Guetta.
The board made an argument - venue sizes. Which more often than not is a great indicator of the billing an act gets at a festival. Madonna not headlining Coachella is not the norm. You just countered with M83 could play arenas if they wanted to - and places like MN aren't hip enough to appreciate M83. A nonsensical counter-point. Take a look in the mirror. Do you think other Lolla headliners in the past couldn't move tickets in MN? M83 struggles to move 1200 in MN but Avicii is playing an arena in Detroit and Kansas City.
M83 has played a good number of festivals and have never come close to sniffing a headliner position. Just wait for the Lolla line-up to be released if none of this can convince you.

Does everybody buy into Perry's statement that the "leaked" lineup was bullshit?

Spoiler alert, despite Avicii winning over everyone on the Ultra webcast, SHM pretty much does the exact same thing as him.

Internet people have lots of time, but this would be the most money anyone has put into faking confirmations. They're real.

I was thinking maybe daily during the weekdays, but that would mean 48 clues before the lineup is released which seems like a lot so maybe every other day or every third day?

Especially since 2/4 of the acts are known by hardly anyone outside of big music fans.
It's gotta be real....ha, maybe they are just desperate for an increase in el riders.

So justice plays Saturday in Toronto for sure, both lolla and osheaga on fri and sun, and Denver on Tuesday. So most likely lolla on Sunday, right? (Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, break, denver).

Huge buzz act and as of now Lolla would only be his third American show so yeah I think he is big enough for that slot.

had a horrible thought about the CTA clues... do you think that these could possibly be 4 of the 12 headliners?
Jack White - South
Justice - North
The Weeknd - Perry's
Die Antwoord - the grove

Yes Justice is confirmed for Osheaga on Friday so they have to be playing Lolla on Sunday.

What does "alt" mean?
I like everything. From Count Basie, Miles Davis, The Beatles, Stones, Zep, The Who, Prince, Madonna, NIN, Jane's Addiction, and several "Modern" Rock/Pop Acts, etc...
So I like Yo-Landi...does that make me "alt"?
That characterization, based on one post--seems rather narrow-minded.

Amsterdam to Chicago is 8.5 hours.
Chicago and Amsterdam is a 7 hour time difference, meaning that when SHM's friday night set concludes, it will be 5 am in the Netherlands, but Axwell probably can't even get on a flight until maybe like 1 or so at the EARLIEST when considering customs and the inevitable clusterfuck around grant park and whatnot, at which point it would be 8 am in Amsterdam. He would land in Amsterdam at 4:30. I honestly don't see a superstar DJ going through this kind of trouble just to DJ a set at some festival in the Netherlands.
Can we please shut the fuck up about SHM now?
