Not sure if this is common knowledge or not, but I read that Dre and Snoop were only thrown into the headliner spot at Coachella once Sabbath were forced to cancel.
I would guess Dre and Snoop doing an incredibly rare set in SoCal is like 10x the draw of an extremely old Black Sabbath.

If we do end up with two main stage edm headliners I think it makes it more unlikely that there will be a hip hop or pop headliner since Lolla has always had at least four rock-indie headliners every year.

I wouldn't bet too much money that Jack White will definitely be back in Chicago playing stuff from his entire catalogue really soon. He may finish up this tour then start a new band, or do something else with his other bands that takes up a few years. I really hope he does the solo thing for a few years because in some sense he's always been a solo artist, but he's incredibly unpredictable.
They'll just book RHCP instead of Jay/Ye at #2. Conflict solved

I think we shoudl keep in mind, the only reason acts like these "headline" is because putting all of the electronic acts at 3pm would be odd. The fact that they "need" it to be dark when they play, i believe, factors greatly into their timeslot.

No Doubt * System of a Down * The Black Keys

Looking at recent lineups, I get the feeling they could go with any of the top 3 as the #1 but end up just giving it to the most #rare act. Depeche over Tool and Killers. Soundgarden over Green Day and Gaga. Eminem over Foos, Muse and Coldplay.

I think getting No Doubt's first show back would be enough of a "get" for C3 to give them #1. I mean, they would definitely draw a bigger crowd than Depeche Mode. It's not so much about popularity as it is about #rare and what it says about the importance of the fest.

well i mean i guess it's been 2 or 3 years since they toured the States, but it's not their first show back since reuniting by any means.
(also, i would be happy to see them (...again))
But still, that's an eternity compared to the 2 months for RHCP or 5 months for TBK.
I still feel like it would be a pretty big deal. Especially if they have a big single out by then and start making the rounds on SNL, The Late Show, etc.

I don't think the top 3 will have two non-rare acts that will have played Chicago within 5 months of Lolla. So at this point, I'm going out on a limb and saying it'll be Sabbath and Jay/Ye in some form.
But then there's the whole, "we've always had at least 4 rock/indie acts" argument. The pattern is going to get broken in some way it seems.
Wanny must have an alarm that goes off whenever someone says anything about SHM.

Or just throw No Doubt in where most people are putting RHCP:
Black Sabbath * No Doubt * The Black Keys
Jack White * Avicii * Justice or other EDM
TBK vs. Avicii
No Doubt vs. Jack White
Sabbath vs. Justice
No Doubt gives them a lot of flexibility for scheduling, similar to RHCP, in that they don't necessarily have to cater to a specifically rock or pop or hip-hop crowd. Hell, they could even have Bush show up for a 4:00 main stage slot while the kids run around back stage.

They headlined areanas / ampitheaters in '09 and haven't played any shows since. Apparently, this year is their 25th anniversary of being a band and they have their first new album in a long time supposedly coming out this summer. Gwen Stefani stayed relevant through the years solo style. I'd rather not see them as a headliner since it's not 1998, but it could be worse.

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that a doofus that is basically just pressing play, acting like they're turning some knobs, dancing to their spectacular light show while moving their hands in retarded ways to hype the crowd can be considered a festival headliner. I could dig The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, or Aphex Twin as a headliner because they've been around for a couple of decades. Justice and SHM have been around for 5 years are only extremely popular because of the EDM trend. That's all it is. Kids hopping on a bandwagon.

My feeling is that they leaked 2 headliners early because they had room to do so. As CG referred to, 3 of the 6 were leaked by Greg Kot in February last year, so they needed to keep the rest as secret as possible. That wasn't the case this year. Personally, I think it's a good idea to have 1 or 2 out in the open because it probably drives up sales prior to the announcement.

Is PJ playing an instrumental set?
Also, I really don't see Tool coming back this early to headline again.
Also, I don't remember eliminating No Doubt and The Cure.
I remember Perry Farrell both saying that the Cure won't be playing, and ridiculing the notion of their having anything to do with the brand (which is all about what's new, not old). I also remember strong hints that No Doubt (not very new either) would be playing another Chicago fest. I also remember zero evidence that either would play Lolla.
Vedder can quite easily make it to Chicago on Sunday. And Lolla recently followed Pearl Jam on twitter (until that fact was noted on this board and they unfollowed them), and liked them on Facebook. Not that those facts necessarily mean anything at all (or that PJ has done much of anything lately other than sputter to a halt), but this is a board taking very seriously the notion of Black Sabbath. I agree that a return visit from Tool would come too soon as well, but I think they too better fit the fest than those old fogies (or younger genre bands like SOAD and Metallica). Perhaps a reunion makes Sabbath au courant, but I remain convinced that this is not their venue.

MMJ played to a full (if not sold-out) MSG last December. They're moving plenty of tickets and are 10x better than any EDM act wishes it could be live (and in general).
Oh how original - an argument about quality when none was being made.
Talk to me when they are playing arenas in Detroit and Kansas City.

I would love to see Tool play Lolla this year, but I feel it's unlikely because of the following news:
Tool Plan To Record New Album In June Or July
Tool will begin recording their new album in June, marking their first time back in the studio since 2006's 10,000 Days. Drummer Danny Carey noted that the LP could be finished within 2012:
"I'm hoping we'll get in the studio by June or July and start tracking . . . The tracking part I'd say [takes] two to three months then probably a month to mix and master and that's it."
Carey also gave fans an insight into the band's creative process:
"Sometimes, if I come up with a beat, the guys will write a riff to that. Like, Justin [Chancellor, bass player] has really been prolific on this record. He's been coming in with tons of riffs. I usually try to find something to compliment it rather than play what he's playing . . ."

I've personally dealt with recording music and I can tell you that it takes a lot of focus and time writing, recording, rewriting, rerecording, mixing, mastering, etc. Touring and recording at the same time seems unlikely so, unfortunately, I would have to rule Tool out this year.

2 blowout 20th anniversary shows followed by a full 20th anniversary tour, plus gearing up for a full European tour this summer, plus recording their new album all not enough for you?
Sabbath and the throne are consistently on peoples predictions. Yet hardly anyone thinks pearl jam can play. All 3 only have European dates in the summer. Pj's dates end in July with vedder doing solo shows, the last one being on aug 3rd in Portugal. If everyone is convinced jay/ye are playing based on their tour/sched, then why not pj??
Also, am I the only one who thinks lolla is unlikely to have 2 edm headliners and a rap one?

They're rumored to play a new festival in MN this summer:

Any possibility that one of the electronic headliners is New Order or Kraftwerk? They both played Ultra, but I have no idea if they have already been ruled out by other dates.
Black Sabbath - Jay-Z - The Black Keys
New Order - Jack White - Avicii

Totally agree - I think New Order is likely, but not sure if they're still popular enough to be headliners. Could be, but I see them as being a sub - similar to the Cars last year. Maybe a sub for the Killers.

I can definitely see them subbing, possibly even a grove closer. A side stage closing spot makes sense for them too. Although I could be totally wrong.

This might sound stupid because i've never been to Lolla, but what are the odds of At The Drive-In playing this year?
They're not a lock, but I'd say odds are pretty good.

They wouldn't be a #1 and, when you're not #1, the radius clause for headliners (among everyone else) can be worked around.

Because they're a possible (and, in the minds of some, probable) headlining option.
