There's absolutely no way Jack White won't headline. Of lolla fest goers, his following dwarfs every other possible headliner, except for maybe WTT just cuz kanye has home court advantage.
Question tho: The fraud who posted the headliner leak like a month ago gave me the most ragin-est boner at the sonic youth possibility, followed by the most severe epidemic of blue balls one has ever seen on this planet after we learned he was full of s***.
Is there anyway in hell that sonic youth will play lolla?
What are the chances they'll do a reunion tour/final show in the near future? Even if they just play ATP again?

This is America. We're ignorant as shit. we lump edm and hip hop into the same category.
Case and point :
2009= Depeche mode

With north coast being almost exclusively electronic and hip hop and happening a month after, 3 edm/hip hop acts as headliners would be unprecedented and unlikely

When predicting lolla headliners, you look through the lenses of "what 6 acts are gonna attract the most 16-40 year olds from varying demographics"
with that in mind, YES rihanna is edm, because the same fukkhead frat kids that made up a large portion of deadmau5's crowd last year would also be at rihannas hypothetical lolla set still desperately trying to bone the same party girls that would also inhabit both of those audiences.

johnwaynewasanazi

Lauryn had a pretty high billing at coachella. the fugees re-uniting would definitely headline. Lupe had a mainstage early in the day before The Cool even came out. I don't think ofwg has even come close to peaking in popularity and we're already talking about them being a sub headline.
you might be right about wu, that was probably just wishful thinking

Black Star? New Album coming out soon

yea but I was talking earlier about how lolla is so shtty at picking the right hip hop acts. at 'roo blackstar and the roots are billed ahead of luda. Lolla would never do that. I'm not saying those are the people I think DESERVE to headline, i'm saying they're probably the most likely acts that lolla would pick to headline.

Yeah no question WTT would headline/put on the best show if they were on the same festival as The Roots/Black Star. Having seen all three live (well.. Mos Def and Talib Kweli separately), WTT concert was just electric and a completely different atmosphere than the other two.

Just throwing a few names out there for possible Rap/Hip-Hop headliners.

Sure. But then who are Justice, Kaskade, M83, Miike Snow, Passion Pit, The Weeknd, etc. going to sub for? Again, Perry's, yes, but we're heavy enough on EDM acts that I'd bet that they will sub for EDM headliners.

Have you been to the fest? Have you looked at past schedules? They don't usually stick to strict genre of music for more than a few hours at a time. They spread them out so people will buy 3-day passes and be there all day every day.

I'm somewhat of a hypocrite, cuz if they book wtt i'll be front and center (unless i have to miss beck/jack white) just because I can't miss something like that.
But yea, hip-hop focuses the least on their live performances. They need hype men cuz they don't have the breathing techniques necessary to deliver a whole verse that even an amateur rock singer would possess. So Kanye doesn't have a hype man, but he often lip syncs. Lil wayne doesn't have a hype man, but he can't spit a full verse with the same tone fluctuation and rhythmic nuances that he does on the albums cuz he can't control his breathing well enough, he basically just screams everything at you. Jay on the other hand, did that whole unplugged album live with no hype man and no lip syncing. You can hear a couple parts where he starts to run short on breath, but I respect the sincerity in that a lot more than the alternatives mentioned above

yea lolla renewed their contract with chicago through like 2030 or something ridiculous like that, but chicago didn't give them the same tax break that they had before, so that will cause the ticket prices to go up even more than usual in the coming years

I'm pointing out that just about every stage-closing hiphop/r&b act (and every EDM act) has been preceded by the same (or each other). I've conceded we could get hiphop->EDM, but also pointed out that there's more than enough EDM to go around that EDM->EDM could be considered more likely.

Hiphop/r&b acts by year (I may be missing some):
2006: Kanye<-Common<-Gnarls Barkley, Blackalicious<-Lyrics Born, Lady Sov (on her own)
2007: The Roots(<-Stephen Marley), M.I.A. (on her own, but at Ben Harper's stage), Lupe Fiasco (on his own)
2008: Kanye<-Gnarls, Rage<-Lupe, Cool Kids<-Cadence Weapon, Kid Sister (on her own but opened Kanye's stage), K'Naan (on his own), Saul Williams(->Girl Talk), Uffie
2009: Snoop (on his own), Atmosphere (on his own), Santigold(->Ben Harper), The Knux(->non hiphop act->)Asher Roth, Kid Cudi (Perry's) - I suspect that several of these acts were originally supposed to sub for the Beastie Boys
2010: Cypress Hill<-Erykah Badu, Nneka (on her own), B.o.B. (on his own, opening Jimmy Cliff's stage)
2011: Eminem<-Cee Lo, Atmosphere(<-indie rock)<-Mayer Hawthorne, Damian Marley/Nas(->Deadmau5), Tinie Tempah(->OK Go->Ratatat), Kid Cudi (Perry's), Cool Kids (Perry's)
2012 (by my estimation): Odd Future, Childish Gambino, Wale, Santigold, Azealia Banks, TBA (WTT? Jay? Rihanna? Beyonce? Beastie Boys?)

One or two, and probably no more, of this year's acts (Wale, maybe Odd Future or Azealia Banks) should be at Perry's (if it exists). Santigold could sub(-sub) for an EDM act or RHCP, or close or sub a side stage. I think Childish Gambino and/or Odd Future (or Azealia) will sub(-sub) for a major hiphop act.

How do we know there haven't been leaks? Perhaps they're just following a different strategy this year instead of going through Kot?

Feel like reposting this for some reason. (Edit: from over a month ago)

I recovered a few dusty tablets from a Mayan temple while on a dig last weekend. Engraved on them were a throne and a curative potion, but I couldn't make the rest out. Quite the strategy there.

They're at Osheaga Friday. The travel realities for the average band dictate that they'll be at Lolla Sunday.

they were still listed as TBA on the osheaga website the last time i checked, i was asking because it's possible that osheaga could have released their schedule since the last time i checked.

so then any band at Osheaga on Saturday (Garbage perhaps) woudl probably NOT be at Lolla?

carligula

Emphasis on the word PROBABLY rather than the word NOT.

We can't rule them out, but we can easily say that Saturday of Lolla and Saturday of Osheaga will have the least amount of overlap compared to the rest of the weekend. There seem to be several (likely) crossover acts playing Toronto on Saturday. (Cue the smartass "airplanes" comments)

Bloc Party appears to be one of the exceptions with Hard LA on Friday, Lolla on Saturday, and Osheaga on Sunday.

Correct. Acts playing Osheaga on Saturday are not likely to play Lolla. Although not impossible given Bloc Party will be doing it, as Carligula mentions.

We already know Feist is playing Osheaga on Saturday and not playing Lolla. I'll take a stab in the dark and speculate Snoop Dogg, Metric and City&Colour as well.

If I'm right, no big loss there IMO.

yeah, i counted 6 last year (DFA1979, Manchester Orch, Bright Eyes, Ratatat, Sam Adams, Mountain Goats) compared to i think 10 from Sunday (friday looks like the least but also seemed to have the least amount of bands)

I may have asked this before and missed the responses, but what are the chances they turn the north end to dance party USA for one of the Lollapalooza days? Say, Friday they book Bassnectar > Kaskade > Avicii > Justice all in one day? This isn't to say there's another three EDM headliners to go with em. Basically, their top 4 EDM acts would all hypothetically play the same day.

WretchedSkye2113

although did anyone see perry's recent tweets?
basically confirmed that Perry's stage will still be around, still have lots of untz-untz, and go topless this year.

Hypothetically, if they did that: one-day tickets for that day would fly, and the other two days probably wouldn't even sell out.

It sounds more to me like:

BMI Stage is to the North Main Stage
as
Perry's is to the Main stages this year.

Black Sabbath day will sell out if they play
Untz day would sell out hella fast like you say (and I agree)
if the other day has, say, Jay-Z/Jack White, it'll sell out too

idk if the fanbase is that extreme at this point, but i wouldn't rule this scenario out yet.

but yeah, it makes more sense for them to spread EDM across all 3 days.

The Black Keys (Passion Pit) vs Sigur Ros (M83) vs. Avicci
Watch the Throne (The Weeknd) vs. Jack White (The Shins) vs. Kaskade
Black Sabbath (At The Drive In) vs. Justice (Florence and the Machine) vs. Childish Gambino

Why would they do away with the Grove headliner?

Because it is retarded and spreads the festival too thin. Having 4 acts at once = less value to the customer.

Muse vs Coldplay vs Ratatat vs Girl Talk= dumb, no matter what you miss 4 acts. Most other time slots you miss 2 or 3.
