Continuing the thread from last (http://theboard.lollapalooza.com/showthread.php?1841-Who-are-the-Rock-Bands) year, I feel as though there aren't as many traditional style rock, hard rock, alt rock bands... unless I am missing it? Sticking with this genre, who are you excited to see?

There's an overall recommendations and discoveries thread, but I feel there is a place for top picks catered more to this audience.

Nine Inch Nails
Queens of the Stone Age
Ghost BC
Baroness
Wavves
Deap Vally
Reignwolf
The Orwells
Skaters
Palma Violets
PUJOL
O'Brother

Did I just list all of them or do more exist?

Ghost BC.

Well, there are WAY more rawk acts this year than 2011 and pretty much on par with 2010.

I guess Baroness but I haven't really liked what I've heard

If you are going to list Palma Violets as a rock band then you have to also include The Vaccines.

I remember falling for this band a few years ago when they were supposed to open a tour for Thrice and Manchester Orchestra that I didn't get to attend. Still, I ordered a really cheap t-shirt from their site and they sent me a free EP with a hand-written thank you note.

I'd also add WAVVES to the list.

Define "Rock"? Like Headbangers? Punk? Hard-core? I assume your definition is something more evolved than 3-chords and a guitar jam after the second break.

Does everyone know what rock means?

I don't think some of you do.

Houndmouth is southern rock if that counts.

I am very excited about Ghost and Baroness. The bottom of the lineup probably has less "would sees" on it than usual this year, but more bands I care quite a bit about, in no small part thanks to the inclusion of Ghost and Baroness.

Yeah, Baroness is pretty damn good

Yeah I think people mean rawk for rock right now. Palma Violets definitely have a bit of rawk and The Vaccines not so much.

Maybe we need to take the lineup, filter out bands who sound like Mumford/Lumineers, anything at Perry's, any rap, and see who is left. Then begin splitting who is "rock" and who is "etc" :)

I don't understand you people. I get why The Vaccines' genre is on the fringe of rock, but they have more than enough songs to qualify, not to mention a reckless live energy to boot.

More entertaining/"rawking" than anything I pulled up by Palma Violets.

glad to see my thread was resurrected... wtf is rawk ? also vaccines/national do not qualify IMO. Charles Bradley sounds pretty solid.

Thank you for making this thread! I was just about to comb the lineup looking for bands just like these.

Well, these two are pretty different to start with...

(and for the record, I like/listen to both)

.. and that's exactly why I can't wait to see these dudes live this Summer, and that I'm not particularly keen on seeing the National live again

Makes me nervous Skaters, the Orwells, and Palma Violets all play the same day. Although if they aren't all at the same time, that will make for one hell of a day.

I count both Palma Violets and The Vaccines as rock, though Palmas lean a bit heavier I guess?

I love Chicken Dippers, though it sounds a bit weird in this recording.

agreed. I am excited for both The Vaccines and Palma Violets and I hope the scheduling doesn't screw me over. Though if I had to pick between the two it'd have to be The Vaccines.
And Chicken Dippers might be my second or third favorite off of the album wow

I would consider rock as songs you wouldn't hear as background music to a Grey's Anatomy episode.
