I tend to favor a big Hall, so if I had a vote here is who would be on my ballot: Bagwell, Bonds, Clemens, Guerrero, Mussina, Raines, Rodriguez, Martinez, Kent, Walker.

    Meh.

Raines not getting in yet is weird. This is final year of eligibility, too.

I'm still trying to figure out the criteria for relievers are but I would take Wagner over Hoffman in a heartbeat.

Hoffman piled up the saves, but that's really all he did. He didn't have the type of dominance of Rivera or Wagner.

Relievers are kind of a weird consideration, though. Most are only good for a handful of years, so I'll give credit to Hoffman for sustained success. Still not Hof worthy, IMO.

I see little difference between Hoffman and Lee Smith and the latter isn't getting in through the writers.

Rivera is a no-brainer but after that, I probably favor the guys who dominated with a high peak over the compilers. That puts me on the fence with Wagner and, later, Nathan.

Owners are threatening a lockout if no agreement on the CBA by December 1. Assholes.

I'm sure Reinsdorf is in the lead. Ugh.

Damn the Cubs have to pay $388,000 to fix Grant Park after the rally. I guess there were a lot more people there but when you compare that to Lolla it's so much money for such a short event.

They fucked it up logistically by closing Columbus for the parade and not reopening it after the parade ended. This caused the majority of the crowd to be crammed on the west side of Grant Park and people were trampling everything.

Let's just get rid of the waiting period and put David Robertson in too while we're at it.

Also this ballot is stacked. At first glance, I picked 14 guys, but I don't see anyway I could get below 10.

There's what, 5 relief pitchers in the HOF? Hoffman has a legit case.

    This what you have:

    1. Wilhelm, Fingers, Gossage: routinely pitched multiple innings to get a save; usually well over a 100 innings a year. Not comparable to the reliever/closer usage pattern we have now. Wilhelm was by far superior to the other two.

    2. Eckersley - the first "modern" closer to get in. Great peak but also got a lot of credit for his above-average career as a starter. Smoltz probably also falls into this category though he was better starter than Eckersley.

    3. Sutter - a joke.

What is the standard for relievers going forward? That is the question that needs to be answered.

All I know is Hoffman was great for a long period of time. Was he the best closer of his time? No. The most dominant of his time? No. But he was very good for a loooong time, has great counting stats, and able to stay healthy for most of his career. The HOF is filled with position players and starting pitchers who fit that description.
